The Christmas holidays are getting closer and there are many people who have already planned a trip well in advance so as not to run out of space. However, the Christmas festivities are just a few weeks away and there may be setbacks that will force you to cancel your AirBnB reservation. We explain how to do it.

AirBnB is a digital platform that has gained fame in recent years. More and more users are turning to it to look for accommodations other than hotels when they visit a city. Hosts (owners) can publish their offers at the price they consider appropriate and Internet users can request a reservation. If you accept it, that is when the money is given.

Guests can cancel a reservation after paying. However, the refund they receive will not always be made in full. Sometimes AirBnB will only refund part of the money we gave for the reservation. You will know the amount they will give you back once you have started your cancellation process, before accepting, so that you can evaluate your decision well.

Cancel an AirBnB step by step

The process of canceling an accommodation reservation on AirBnB is very simple and you can do it from the web browser, on computers; or in the application, for iOS (iPhone) or Android.

Both on the website and from the app, you just have to log in and go to the “Travel” section. Once there, select the reservation you want to cancel and go to “Reservation Details”. At that point, you will see the option “Cancel reservation.” It is important that you fill in the reason why you want to do it.

Before confirming that you want to cancel the reservation, AirBnB will inform you of the refund you will receive. This can be total or partial, depending on the reason you give for the cancellation, the host’s cancellation policy or whether you purchased travel insurance.

You can receive a refund even if the host’s cancellation policy does not contemplate it

It should be noted that there are situations where you may receive a full refund or an amount greater than the standard refund in the owner’s cancellation policy. These are the following:

  • Cancellation of the reservation due to “extraordinary circumstances”, such as officially recognized health emergencies or epidemics, official restrictions on movement, military interventions and other hostilities, large-scale interruptions of basic supplies or natural disasters.
  • Cancellation for a valid reason contemplated in the “AirBnB Alternative Reservation and Refund Policy”:
    • The host cancels the reservation before arrival
    • The host does not give access to the accommodation
    • The accommodation is not in habitable condition upon arrival:
      • It does not present adequate hygiene and health conditions
      • Contains elements dangerous to health or safety
    • The accommodation is very different from the information in the advertisement:
      • It’s not the same type of space.
      • The number or type of rooms is incorrect
      • Location is incorrect
      • The listing does not indicate that a person or pet will be present during the stay
      • A special service or feature in the ad is not available or does not work

If any of these situations apply and you would like to request a refund or ask for help finding another accommodation, you should contact AirBnB or the host. According to the website, you must do so within 72 hours of discovering the problem with the reservation. Additionally, you must accompany your request with evidence, such as photographs, videos or a message from the host confirming the situation.
