Uppercase or lowercase letters
On the iPhone and iPad keyboard, the letters change based on whether you’re typing an uppercase or lowercase letter. Would you prefer to always see capital letters, just like on a physical keyboard? You can set that. We also show you how to use Caps Lock in this tip. You use this if, for example, you want to write an entire sentence in capital letters.

- Always see capital letters
Using Caps Lock on iPhone and iPad
By turning on Caps Lock, you only type capital letters in the text field you are currently working on. You will find a special key for this on physical keyboards, but there is not enough room for it on the iPhone and iPad (with the exception of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro). Therefore, you can use a trick to enable Caps Lock on these devices.
The meaning of the Shift key from left to right: lower case, one upper case, Caps Lock
To enable Caps Lock, press the Shift key twice. You will then see the Shift symbol change to an up arrow with an underscore under it. You can now type as much as you want and it will automatically be capitalized. Caps Lock is disabled if you put away the keyboard, go to the numbers, or press the Shift key once.
Does not it work? Then you probably need to make an adjustment in your settings. Go to Settings > General > Keyboards and turn on the Enable Caps Lock switch.
Capital letters on the iOS keyboard
Do you want to make sure that you always see uppercase letters on your keyboard, just like on a physical keyboard, even if lowercase letters appear? That’s how you do that:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to the Accessibility menu and tap Keyboards.
- Turn off the switch next to Show lowercase letters.
Note that this switch not only affects the iOS keyboard, but also unofficial keyboards such as Swype and SwiftKey. The condition is that these alternative keyboards must support it.
Do you find the screen of your iPhone a bit too big to type with one hand? Apple has also come up with something for that. You can read more about operating your keyboard with one hand in our tip.
