Can’t recognize the black and white mouse cursor on your Mac well (enough)? Find out here how to adjust the colors in the System Preferences.

From macOS Monterey you can change the color of your Mac cursor. This is an accessibility option, but it’s fine if you prefer a color combination other than black and white. This way you can personalize your Mac even more!

Adjust the color of the Mac cursor

When we talk about customizing the Mac cursor color, we mean two things: the border and the fill. By default, the border of your cursor is white and the fill is black. If you want to keep that white edge or just the black filling, you can. You can choose from almost every color you can imagine.

Note that this feature requires macOS Monterey. This software update for your Mac will be released in the fall of 2021. Here’s how:

  1. Open the System Preferences app ( > System Preferences).
  2. Open the Accessibility menu and click Display in the left column.
  3. In the right column, click the Pointer tab.
  4. Adjust the outline color and/or the fill color.

Mac cursor color change
In the beta of macOS Monterey, the colors on screenshots are not yet shown correctly, but the idea is clear.

Aren’t you satisfied? Then you can always adjust the colors. There’s also a button to instantly reset everything to black and white. This window also contains a button to make the pointer grow larger when you shake your mouse. This feature has been on the Mac for a while and you can use it right now. The same goes for the ability to make your cursor bigger.

The set color of your cursor remains the same when you use your Mac’s dark mode. If you want to know more about this feature, check out our tip.
