On the Apple Watch you will find the medals earned in the Activity app. Where you find them depends on the watchOS version:
- watchOS 10: On the Home screen, tap the icon at the bottom right.
- watchOS 9 and earlier: On the home screen, scroll down until you see the medals.
Medals on the iPhone
On the iPhone you will find the medals in the Condition app. Open this app and scroll down to the ‘Medals’ section. By tapping Show more you will see all medals earned. Tap it to view an explanation.
This is how you can earn medals on the Apple Watch
Now you know where to find the medals, but how do you earn them? As you can see from the image above, there are several ways to get a medal:
- By exercising sufficiently every day
- By regularly doing all kinds of workouts
- By participating in challenges
Medals for daily exercise
With the Apple Watch, Apple tries to encourage you to lead an active lifestyle, by exercising daily, exercising regularly and getting up from the couch several times a day. By default, Apple assumes that you burn 500 calories per day by exercising, doing 30 minutes of intensive exercise and getting up 12 times a day to walk around. You can set these activity goals yourself, so if you are ill or injured, you can also set them a little lower. If you are super sporty, choose slightly higher values. The intention is that you complete the 3 activity rings for Exercise, Training and Standing every day. If you succeed, you will receive medals for a perfect week, perfect month and the like. You also get medals for the most days of exercise in a row and for achieving 200% or 400% of your exercise goal.
Earn medals with workouts
You can also earn medals for completing a specific workout, such as your first yoga workout or your first cycling workout. In addition, medals can be earned for the longest walk, the greatest height difference, the longest bike ride and 10 kilometer run.
Earn medals with challenges
There are even more medals to be earned by participating in challenges. There are three variants:
- Personal challenges, where you have to complete 1500 training minutes or run 20 kilometers in a month, for example.
- Special challenges, for example in honor of National Parks Day or New Year. Apple calls this “Limited Edition Challenges.”
- Competitions against friends: If you have challenged a friend to a competition, you will receive a badge if you are the winner.
These medals also appear in the overview. The special challenges also come with stickers that you can use in iMessage conversations to brag about your achievements.
Is it necessary to earn all these medals? Well no. Apple does not oblige you to do anything and it is completely fine to just use the Apple Watch for apps and notifications. But they can motivate you to try something new or to cover a longer distance or increase your speed. This way you can become fitter without noticing, while you decide which challenges you participate in. For some people it’s hard enough to fill the daily exercise ring, while others try to get all the medals available. You decide.
Help, my medal doesn’t appear! What can I do?
Have you achieved your goal, but the medal does not appear in the overview screen of the Fitness app on your iPhone? According to Apple, it may take up to 9 days for the medal to appear. So it’s a matter of being patient. Also make sure that both your iPhone and Apple Watch are up to date. Also check whether your Apple Watch can connect to a WiFi network.
