Testing new features?

Want to take advantage of experimental features in Google’s Chrome browser for the iPhone, iPad or Mac? Then enable them using the steps in this tip. You can then be the first to try the latest features, although they will not always be stable.

Experimental features in Chrome

Not only Safari has experimental features, you will also find all kinds of experimental features in Google’s Chrome browser. For example, you can sometimes test new designs or use technology that makes websites load faster.

Experimental Chrome features: Meet ‘flags’

Google Chrome lets you activate all kinds of experimental features called ‘flags’, as well as all kinds of settings and tools that anyone can adjust. Flags are experimental features that improve speed, security, privacy, and other features. They are intended for developers and advanced users, who can sniff out a new feature before it is officially added to the browser. It works on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux and Chrome OS.

The best approach is to activate one flag at a time and investigate how it works. Don’t activate a whole bunch of flags. If you encounter any problems, you can return to the page mentioned and disable the flag again. The Reset all button at the top of the screen allows you to disable all experimental features at once. The experimental features are always changing, so we can’t recommend which ones you should try. Before you know it, they’ll be in the official version of the Chrome browser, or deleted.

Enable experimental Chrome features on iPhone and iPad

You must set the experimental features per device. It’s not an option that syncs across all your devices. We recommend that you first see what a function entails before you start playing with it. Here’s how to enable the experimental features on an iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Chrome browser on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Navigate to chrome://flags/
  3. Browse the list of available flags or search for a specific flag by name or description. You use the search box at the top for this.
  4. Make a selection and restart the Chrome browser to see the changes.

Experimental features in Chrome

Does the link not work? Then copy it and paste it as if it were a website address. Please note that these features have deliberately not been rolled out to everyone yet. There is a chance that websites do not work or work less well. Google can also change how the function works at any time. If you miss a function in the list that you initially saw, it has been removed by Google.

Experimental Chrome features on Mac

You can also use the experimental functions on the Mac. It also applies that some functions do not work completely properly and that you should take this into account. Enabling the experimental features works in a similar way:

  1. Open the Chrome browser on the desktop.
  2. Go to chrome://flags/
  3. Select the desired options.
  4. Restart the browser.

You will also find all kinds of experimental Safari features in Safari for iOS. You can also install the Safari Technology Preview on the desktop, with all kinds of new features that will only be rolled out to the final version later. This happens when the feature is completely finished and stable enough to publish.
