When we talk about an application to create spreadsheets, the first application that comes to mind is Microsoft Excel, an application that is part of the Office suite of applications and is currently known as Microsoft 365, since it works through a subscription.
The Microsoft 365 subscription allows users to download all Office applications in addition to using the online version, a version that has always been developed differently than the desktop applications.
The best example of how the development of the web version and the desktop version have always followed different paths can be found in the latest update that the web version of Excel has received, a version that has not only received aesthetic improvements to offer the same design as the desktop version, but has also added functions that, at this time, are not available in the computer version.
If you regularly use Excel and want to know all the changes it has received in terms of functions, it is more than likely that, when you finish reading this article, you will end up uninstalling Office from your PC, at least Excel.
What’s new in the web version of Excel
There is no doubt that Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into this online version of its well-known spreadsheet program to meet the needs of the majority. In this way, those who are used to this version in particular will not miss all the tools available in the desktop version that we are used to. Let’s look at the main new features added now.
Resizing rows and columns in Excel is a process that we must do through the context menu that is displayed when previously selecting the rows or columns.
When we select several rows or columns in the web version, two points are displayed on which we must click to change the size equally, without having to carry out the process through the contextual menu.
Another new feature available in the web version allows you to add rows and columns using the two dots that appear when you select rows or columns.
When we position the mouse over these points, we can add a row above or below (depending on whether we position the mouse over the top or bottom point) or to the right or left using the same criteria. Once we have selected rows or columns and used the right-click context menu to add new content, we are done with it.
Hiding and unhiding rows or columns is now much easier too. When you select rows or columns, if there are hidden rows or columns, two arrows will appear, one pointing to each side to show them, so again, you don’t need to select the rows or columns between which the hidden content is located in order to show it.
Freezing panes to improve navigation in large spreadsheets is much easier and faster using the web version, as we simply have to drag the line to the space we want to freeze and prevent it from moving, whether we are talking about rows or columns.
Drag and drop rows and columns. This is, without a doubt, one of the functions that Excel users have been asking for for the most years, a function that is now available via the web. To change the position of rows or columns, all you have to do is select and drag them to the position you want and drop them.
These are some of the new features that the Excel version has just added, functions that are now available to all users.
