Give music as a gift

You can give music songs as gifts from the iTunes app on the iPhone and iPad. You pay via your own iTunes credit or another method and the recipient receives a code with which he or she can download the song for free via their own account. That is how it works:

  1. Open the iTunes Store app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the Music tab.
  3. Choose a music song or music album to give as a gift.
  4. Tap the share button at the top right to open the share menu.
  5. Choose Give a gift.
  6. In the next screen you choose the recipient and the time you want to send the gift. You can also add a personal message.
  7. Choose a theme to send the gift in.

You then pay using your own payment details. The recipient will now receive a code that he/she can hand in to download the music.

Give music and movies as gifts on the Mac

Since the introduction of the Music app on the Mac, it has become a lot more difficult to give music as gifts. Previously you had the iTunes app with the associated iTunes Store. There is now a detour, but it is not convenient. It is easiest if you already have the album in question in your library, whether or not via Apple Music. Do you have a subscription to Apple Music? Then add the music album to your library. You can delete it later if necessary.

Since the disappearance of iTunes on the Mac, it is no longer possible to give a movie as a gift.

  1. Open the music album in the Music app.
  2. Right-click on the album cover or single and choose Show in iTunes Store.
  3. Click on the downward-pointing arrow next to the price.
  4. Click on Give Album as a gift. If it is a separate song, there will of course be a different text here.
  5. You will now arrive at a screen where you can enter the recipient’s email address and an optional message. You can also indicate on which date the gift should be sent.
  6. On the specified day, this person will receive an email with a download link to download the item for free.

Give a music album as a gift via iTunes

If you prefer to give the gift away at a special time, you can also print a voucher via your own printer.

Unfortunately, you cannot give multiple items as a gift at the same time. What is possible is that you give one album to multiple recipients (although you will of course have to pay multiple times).

There are even more gift ideas at Apple. Give a book as a gift or maybe someone would like to receive an app or game as a gift. If you really don’t know what makes someone happy, consider giving iTunes credit.
