Night Shift on iPhone and iPad
Did you know that your iPhone and iPad have a Night Shift function for the evenings? This makes the screen less blue, which should be a lot more pleasant for your eyes. In this tip we explain what you can do with Night Shift and how you can activate night mode on the iPhone and iPad. For example, you can read which devices are suitable for this night mode and how you can quickly switch it on via the Control Panel. You will also see how to automatically enable night mode and we offer solutions if it does not work.
- Suitable devices
- Set Night Shift
- From the Control Center
Night Shift is not the same as dark mode. Read all about dark mode here.
Suitable iOS devices for Night Shift
Almost all Apple devices currently in use support this feature. Watch:
- iPhone 5s and newer
- iPad mini 2 and newer
- iPod touch 6th generation and newer
- iPad Air (2013) and newer
- All iPad Pro models
If you have a different model than the above, it is unfortunately not possible to activate night mode. If you have a Mac, you can also use this function. In a separate tip we explain how Night Shift works on the Mac.
Set up Night Shift on iPhone and iPad
If you have one of the above devices, set night mode using the steps below. It’s childishly simple:
- Open the Settings app.
- Choose Screen & Brightness.
- Select the Night Shift option.
- Select whether the feature should be enabled automatically (scheduled) or manually.
- You can use the bar below to adjust the color to your own liking.
If you choose to have night mode automatically activated between sunset and sunrise, it is necessary to turn on location services. You can find this option under Settings > Privacy. The time zone should also be set automatically using your location. You can set this in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System.
Night Shift in the iOS Control Center
You can also enable Night Shift directly from the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. How you get to the Control Panel depends on your device, but you can find it this way:
- iPhones with a round home button: swipe up from the bottom of your screen
- iPhones with Face ID facial recognition and iPads: swipe the top right corner of your screen down
Once you have opened the Control Panel, you must press and hold your finger on the vertical brightness slider. This is located to the left of the volume slider. A button will appear at the bottom of the screen where you can switch the warm colors on and off.
In addition to this evening mode, there is also the dark mode. Essentially, the white tones are converted into dark tones and vice versa. This can also help in the evenings, so that you do not suffer from burning eyes. We still recommend leaving a light on, because it has been proven that looking at one direct light source can be bad for your night’s sleep.
