If you not only use Google Maps occasionally to get from one point to another, but you want it to be like an encyclopedia of interesting places to group or share, it is best to create lists with the map tool.
Lists in Google Maps are locations that you save assigned by groups. This way, for example, you can keep track of all your favorite places and locations that you have visited in the tool. Keep in mind that the app already includes some lists by default, including Want to Go, Tagging, Favorites, Featured Places, and Travel Plans. However, you can also create your own.
Create a new location list
Since the concept of Google Maps Lists may never have been what you first think of when you open the navigation app, you may be a little lost and not know where it is. In the main Maps menu you just have to click on the bottom menu, on the tab where it says “Saved” (the central one).
Below you can find the default lists that we told you before, but also a blue button that says “New list.” Next, select an icon, name, and description for the list. You can also configure its privacy. You can configure it as Private or Shared (allows other people to see or modify it). Once you’re done, tap Save in the top right corner. The list will now appear in Your lists (which you access in the tab where it says “Saved”). You’ll also see it when you try to add a location to a list.
Of course, a list is useless if you don’t start adding locations that make sense of it. Luckily, once you’ve created a list, adding locations to it is easy. Just follow these steps:
- Search and find the location in question on Google Maps. You can search for it in the search bar or select one by hand by browsing the map.
- Once the information is displayed, the screen where they put address, time, etc., tap “Save.” If you can’t find it easily, scroll to the right, past other options such as “Get directions”, “Start navigation”, “Call” or “Directory”.
- Select the lists you want to add the location to and tap “Done” in the top right corner.
If you want to remove a location from your list, tap the three dots next to the list and choose Edit List. Then tap the X button next to the place name.
How to share Google Maps list
If the list you have created has not been with the privacy restriction that the fact that it is private and you have made it shared, it means that other people will not only be able to see it, but they can even modify it. This is useful, for example, if you are traveling with a group of friends and each one wants to choose their preferences about what to visit.
If you want to make a list public so anyone can see it, tap the three dots to the right of a list, then tap Share List. If you only want to share a list of places of interest that you have grouped together, you can also share the private list as well by pressing three dots and Share List. If you’re trying to share a private list, a pop-up window will appear clarifying that anyone with the link can access your list, as well as your name and profile picture.
