Select text with Live Text
Live Text lets you select and recognize text on photos, videos, and images. You can then copy and paste the text or have it translated. This is useful if, for example, you see a poster and want to copy certain text such as a URL to look up more information later at home. In this article we explain how to enable it, how to use it and what you need for it.
It does not always work well in Dutch. This is because Apple does not yet offer official support for Live Text in Dutch. However, copying simple texts such as names, phone numbers and email addresses works well.

- Go to Settings > General > Language & Region.
- Scroll down and turn on Live Text.
- You get a pop-up that it doesn’t work in Dutch yet. Tap Turn on.
If you also want to recognize text on photos, screenshots and other images, you must add an extra language at Settings > General > Language and region, namely English. Your preferred language will then be Dutch, with English as the second option. If you already used your iPhone in English, you obviously do not have to do this.
Mac
You can also use Live Text for photos on Mac from macOS Monterey. Live text in videos requires at least macOS Ventura.
macOS Ventura

- Click the General tab and choose Language & Region.
- Turn on Live Text. A message appears stating that the function only works in certain languages and not in Dutch. Click OK.

Although Dutch is not supported, you can still select and copy text in images. The only thing missing is the translation function.
Use live text with a photo or video in Photos

- Open Photos on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Choose a photo or video with text on it. If it’s a video, pause the moment you see text.

- You can then copy this text with Copy, look it up on the internet with Look up, translate it with Translate or share it with Share….
If you’re wondering if there’s text to select on the image, check if the Photos app detected text. A scan symbol appears at the bottom right of the photo or screenshot that indicates whether there is anything to copy. You can optionally press that to see what has been detected by the app itself. You can always try to select text yourself in the way described above.
