Photos, documents or other files

If you want to send photos, documents and other files by email, there are several ways to do this on the iPhone and iPad. This tip explains two ways: via the share menu and while writing the email message itself. We also show you how to send an existing email as an attachment in a new email.

Send email attachments via the Mail app

You can email photos and other files in several ways on the iPhone and iPad. It just depends on where the files are located. For example, in the Photos app on your iPhone, in the Files app, on iCloud or on Dropbox.

  • Email photo
  • Email document
  • Add attachment to email later
  • Send existing email as an attachment
  • Send large attachments

Send photos as attachments via email

To send a photo that is on your device, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to the Camera Roll in the Photos app.
  2. Select the photo(s) you want to share.
  3. Open the sharing menu and choose Email.
  4. A new email will now be created containing the photo(s).
  5. Press the send button.
  6. A pop-up will now appear where you can choose the size of the photos.

If you already have an ongoing email conversation that you would like to add the photo to at a later time, that is also possible. In that case, see the Add attachment section further on.

Share documents via email

There are two ways to send documents and other files:

  • From the relevant app. If you are working on a document in Pages, you can share the document from the Pages app and then choose Email.
  • From a storage service or app. You can select the file you want in the Files or Dropbox app or any other cloud service, open the share menu and then share via Email. You can also often choose an alternative mail app, if you use one.

Below you can see how this works from the Pages app, but it works the same way from any other app.

Add attachment to email later

While writing an email message, you discover that an attachment needs to be included. That’s no problem, because you can also add a photo or document when you’re almost done with the email.

Here again there are two ways:

  • Via the white pop-up that appears when you tap the text cursor.
  • Via the gray bar that appears above the keyboard.

The white pop-up contains several copy and paste options as you are used to, but scrolling through it takes you to the options for attachments such as photos and files. In the menu above the keyboard you will find options for photos and videos, the camera, scanning a document, using Live Text, adding a document or creating a drawing, respectively.

Create new email and add attachment

Send existing email as an attachment

It is also possible to send a received or previously sent email as an attachment as a PDF. You do this as follows:

  1. Open the email that you want to send as an attachment to a new email.
  2. Tap the answer arrow at the bottom.
  3. Go to Print.
  4. You are now in print view. Tap the share button at the top there.
  5. Now choose the Mail app from the share menu to attach the original email as a PDF attachment. Create your email and send.

Send large attachments

Large attachments can fill your mailbox and take up a lot of bandwidth to send. If you want to send a large file, take a look at the options of Mail Drop. With that

Another option is to use special apps and services for sending large files. Think of WeTransfer and SendAnywhere. You can read more about it in the tip below.
