On the Mac, you can set up a dynamic desktop that changes over time. This gives a more natural effect to your Mac and is easier on your eyes.

Switching desktop on your Mac

Why always look at the same desktop background when you don’t have to? There are several ways to ensure that the wallpaper or desktop image is constantly changing. Below we discuss your options.

  • Dynamic desktop
  • Changing wallpaper

The dynamic desktop changes throughout the day. You can use a light-colored wallpaper during the day and as the evening approaches, the wallpaper will become darker. It’s easier on your eyes and fun to watch. The background depends on the time of day and your location. If it gets dark early, the early Mac will adjust. The transition of the wallpaper happens very gradually.

Here’s how you can set up a dynamic desktop:

  1. Open the System Preferences app (via  > System Preferences).
  2. Click Desktop & Screen Saver and choose the Desktop menu.
  3. In the left column, click Apple > Desktop.
  4. Choose a dynamic background. You can recognize these by the diagonally striped images or by the day/night symbol.

The wallpapers with a day/night symbol do not change throughout the day. They only change when your entire Mac switches from light mode to dark mode and vice versa. Want to know more about dark mode on Mac? Check it out in our tip.
