Even when listening via headphones

Did you know you can quickly use Shazam from the Control Center? You can then recognize music faster, without needing an app or using Siri.

For years you have been able to Shazam Siri to directly ask the assistant to recognize a music track. But there may be a faster way to recognize music, which also offers additional options: Shazam in the Control Center. How does this work, where are your Shazams stored and what can you do with them? This way you can even recognize music on your headphones or earbuds with Shazam.

Use Shazam from the Control Center

If you hear a song on the radio or somewhere else and want to know which song it is, do the following:

  1. Open the Control Panel. On iPhones without a home button, swipe down from the top right. On an iPhone with a home button, swipe up from the bottom.
  2. Press the added music recognition button. You can recognize this by the Shazam logo.
  3. At the top of the Control Center it says that Shazam music recognition is enabled. Your iPhone or iPad is now listening to music around you.
  4. The result of your Shazam appears via a message on the screen, including the artist and the song.

The music recognition listens for about ten seconds and then switches itself off again. If no result is found, you will also see this in a message. So you don’t have to worry that Shazam is always listening when you add the button to the Control Panel.

If a result is found, you can press and hold the notification to expand it. If you tap on the album cover, you will go to the Shazam app. All songs that you recognize via the Shazam button in Control Center are automatically added to the Shazam app (if you have it installed). You will also see a button here to immediately listen to the song via Apple Music.

If you do not have the Shazam app installed, an App Clip from Shazam will be installed. This is a mini version of the app, in which you can listen to a fragment and see more information about the artist and the song. You will also see the lyrics of the song there (if available).

Finally, you can find a history of recognized songs by pressing and holding the Shazam button in the Control Center. The complete history from your Shazam account via iCloud is displayed here. You can scroll through them and tapping on a number will take you to the page in the Shazam app.

Shazam also recognizes music via headphones or earbuds

The useful thing about this function is that Shazam not only recognizes music around you via the microphone, but also listens through your headphones or earbuds. On Android this has been possible for a while with the Shazam app, but due to privacy restrictions of iOS, the Shazam app itself does not have that option.

Now that the button is built into iOS by default, Shazam can listen to what you listen to on your headphones. For example, if you’re listening to the radio through your earbuds or watching a movie or TV series on your iPhone or iPad with headphones on, you can quickly recognize the song using the Shazam button in Control Center.
