Family body option with tailgate and enlarged trunk
Article completed 02/09/2022: A month ago Juan Carlos wrote this article about the price launch of the Taycan Sport Turismo family. A month later we attended the official presentation of the entire Sport Turismo range in the snowy mountains of Salzburg, so we are going to tell you how its commercial offer will be structured. If you remember our recent video test of the Porsche Taycan GTS, in it we told you that that model would be the first to incorporate the new Sport Turismo bodywork, and that shortly, this family-style variant would be extended to the rest of the range. Well… said and done: the brand has just officially presented, and in one fell swoop, its new Taycan, Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S with the surname Sport Turismo.
Despite this, the exterior dimensions are practically identical to those of the sedan model: it measures the same 4.96 meters in length and retains the same 2.90 m wheelbase; but its total height does gain 1 centimeter, and as the roofline is more horizontal, passengers in the rear row will enjoy 4.5 cm more headroom. During the presentation we confirmed that the rear seats are more than comfortable for adults, with enough space to travel adults over 1.90 m tall.
And since we are talking about the roof: one of the main novelties that this Sport Turismo GTS variant brings is its panoramic roof with adjustable dimming. It incorporates nine active liquid crystal sheets, controlled from the infotainment system, which allow the brightness of the cabin to be adjusted to the taste of its occupants. We show you its amazing and instantaneous drive in our video test of the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo:
Precisely, the GTS model will be the first Taycan Sport Turismo to reach the Spanish market: it will be available at the end of February 2022, while the rest will do the same in mid-March, just three weeks later. The price list is as follows:
Porsche Taycan Sport Touring (300 kW / 408 hp) €88,779
Porsche Taycan 4S Sport Turismo (390 kW / 530 CV) €110,031
Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo (440 kW / 598 CV) €136,232
Porsche Taycan Turbo Sport Turismo (500 kW / 680 CV) €157,342
Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo (560 kW / 761 CV) €191,222

First contact with the Sport Turismo family
Beyond the interior habitability, which we could already verify in the Cross Turismo test, this model also has an increase of 9 mm in height for the driver, which does not translate, far from it, into a feeling or driving position that is too high. And since we’re talking about the interior, let’s also talk about its arsenal of equipment and technology. This is a Taycan to use, unchanged except for the Sport Chrono package clock in the central area of the dashboard that can be a compass if you opt for its off-road brother, the Cross Turismo (first sensations).
The decorative moldings are different depending on the finish and the choice of options by the customer. The brushed aluminum interiors belong to the GTS finish, betting on a sportier and darker character in the Turbo S of the presentation, which also combined its Mamba Green Metallic tone with textile details in the same color. The 4S Frozen Blue Metallic, on the other hand, had Alcantara leather on the steering wheel but opted for a more delicate and sophisticated look.
In terms of technology, we continue with the presence of up to four screens, being the optional co-pilot and 10.9 inches as the central one. The most significant evolution in this sense is that, from Porsche, they claim to have improved the Chargin Planner of their system.
This implies better planning and knowledge of the charging stations, now you will be able to filter the charging stations based on the performance of the charging posts, avoiding those that will keep you waiting for hours. In addition, in 2022 and as a great novelty for the electric range, they have opted for the integration of Android Auto in the Porsche Communication Management system and have improved the understanding of “colloquial” language by their Voice Pilot assistant.
Roomier than a Taycan saloon
The most significant advantage of having this Panamera rear figure is the huge tailgate that makes it a 5-door. We have more space or a wider access to the trunk with 801 mm width and 543 mm height, which in the sedan is 434 mm and 330 mm, respectively. We are then faced with a trunk of almost 530 liters, with the front part of 81 liters, but that will depend on the equipment that we want to add to the Taycan Sport Turismo.
For example, with the Sound Package Plus we have up to 446 liters of capacity compared to the 407 of the sedan, but if we add the BOSE surround system, which is standard from the Turbo, this capacity is reduced to 405 liters. If you want to take advantage of all the cargo space, we can fold down the seats, which fold down in a 60:40 configuration, granting 1,212 liters with the Package and 1,171 with the Bose system.
At the wheel of the Taycan range
It is the first time that I have within my reach a complete test of the Taycan range, but even with those, I would not change my opinion about the almost perfect balance of the GTS. The tweaks to the chassis are just and necessary to experience sensory and sporty driving without having to go to the more powerful versions just because.
It is true, the electrified bullet of the Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and its top speed is limited to 260 km/h. The GTS, on the other hand, settles for a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h. At the wheel of the most performant, fillings jump out in sports modes and it is incredible how fast you can go with this electric without hardly realizing it. But not only that, it is also important to value the confidence that the filtering of its air suspension gives, so with the Turbo or Turbo S you must be more cautious and be aware of what you must stop when you reach the curve.
With more than 2,770 kilograms of weight (in the Sport Turismo version and therefore more in the rest of the models) it is very important that the set-up of the Taycan is well calibrated, something that happens in its entire range but especially in performance. It goes without saying that the PDCC, which influences the distribution of weights according to the body roll, is key to making the car feel like a board in the face of greater demand.
Luckily, and like the rest of the Stuttgart family, they go as fast as they can stop in a heartbeat. In the most performance versions they are carbon-ceramic and, taking into account the weight of this car, it does not seem unreasonable to opt for them. In any case, if you prefer not to go to such a large outlay or put them optional in a 4S (almost 10,000 euros) you can stay calm with the series ones. In the case of the 4S model, it incorporates 360 mm diameter cast iron discs with and 358 at the rear with 6 and 4-piston fixed brake calipers, respectively. It is the same configuration of the GTS that, optionally, you can order the option of tungsten carbide-coated PSCB discs, a layer that improves performance in demanding driving or the so-called carbon-ceramic PCCB discs. In the Turbo S they come standard with 420 mm at the front axle and 410 mm at the rear.
Charging time
One of the details that Porsche has insisted on highlighting is that, in this new generation to come with the Sport Turismo, they have incorporated modifications in the energy management software by the engines. The Stuttgart engineers have taken the opportunity to tweak some aspects of the thermal management, pulling more of both engines in relaxed driving to thus reduce consumption and compensate for the worse aerodynamic coefficient of the family bodies.
If what you are looking for is a Taycan to travel comfortably, given that the Spanish infrastructure is beginning to be decent and it looks like it will be approved shortly, you should opt for the 4S Sport Turismo that reaches up to 498 kilometers according to WLTP approval. And, without dwelling too long because it’s like the rest of the Taycan family: the Sport Turismo comes with two chargers. One of 11 kW for alternating current and another of 50 kW for direct current that, optionally, can be 150 kW and we recommend without a doubt.
How could it be otherwise, having such large batteries with considerable capacities provides not only more performance, but also shorter charging times. In a fast charger that grants the 270 kW of admitted power of the Taycan, we will get 80% of the battery in just over 22 minutes. Which means that we can get 100 km of autonomy in just five minutes but we are mistreating and shortening the battery life. In case of finding a 50 kW charger, we will have to wait more than an hour and a half for that 80% and, during a trip, we can use the Destination Charing service to find 11 kW chargers in private facilities such as Restaurants, Hotels and others.
