In order to improve its operating system, Microsoft is constantly sending out updates for the versions of Windows that are still supported. Of course, this is something that extends to Windows 11, although these patches do not always work as well as we would like.
The software giant is currently sending out updates of varying importance, although they are fairly constant. Recently, compatible Windows 11-based computers have received a cumulative update to fix various bugs, we are referring to KB5043080.
However, at the moment, many users are detecting some major problems after installing this patch. Basically, what we want to tell you with this is that when trying to update Windows 11 to version 24H2 after the arrival of KB5043080, the system will give us an error. Specifically, during the process an error message will appear that says Operation not supported, which translates into a serious problem.
We must keep in mind that the new version 24H2 of the operating system comes with a new feature called cumulative checkpoint updates. This is a feature that basically takes care of reducing the size of the updates that reach us on a monthly basis. However, the latest cumulative update sent this September 2024, may break the Windows Update function.
Here we find one of the so-called cumulative checkpoint updates. This means that Windows 11 now only downloads the missing files in order to reduce their size, as is the case with the aforementioned KB5043080. But unfortunately for many users, this cumulative update has a serious problem. And that is that it does not allow us to install version 24H2 of the system.
How to fix Windows 11 update failure
What’s more, there are those who point out that when trying to install it on a PC with 24H2 already running, the process stops halfway. At this point we must bear in mind that for the moment Microsoft has not acknowledged the failure with Windows 11 KB5043080. What it has confirmed is that some people may have problems installing future updates if they have installed it, as is the case with the aforementioned 24H2.
We must also keep in mind that this is a bug that affects all editions of Windows 11 24H2, including the Special Edition, Enterprise and Education, in addition to the ARM. Apparently this is a problem that occurs because the FoD was added from a local source on the last cumulative checkpoint update. Due to all this, it will not be possible to update to the Windows 11 version.
One of the solutions we can use is to try to manually download and reinstall KB5043080 or a newer version. This is something we can achieve by downloading the patch from the official Microsoft catalog, specifically from this link.
Here we will only have to do a search with the official name of the Windows update, download it and install it on our Windows 11-based computer. From there and if we want to update to 24H2, which gave us problems before, it should now work.
Microsoft is currently keeping mum about when it plans to fix these installation issues.
