By not waiting months to receive a new car, more and more users are looking at the second-hand market. But not only at the national level. Experts confirm that the semiconductor crisis has triggered used imports, especially diesel of German origin.
The shortage of microchips that is affecting the automotive industry so much has resulted in months of waiting to receive a new car. In return, during the first weeks of scarcity, the demand for used and leased vehicles increased, but this is causing, in turn, a reduction in stock and an increase in prices.
There is another consequence that we were unaware of and that the vehicle ‘remarketing’ company BCA Spain has discovered: in Spain the importation of used cars has skyrocketed. Specifically, there has been an increase of 35% compared to 2020 and 12.2% compared to 2019.
Buying a car in Germany: everything you need to know
Imports of used vehicles grow
BCA has published its Radiography and keys in the importation of VO , a report in which it details that purchases abroad, mainly in Europe, of second-hand cars already account for 13% of total registrations in Spain, when before exceeded 6%.
In the second half of 2021, a record 55,512 units was reached, 32% above those of the same period in 2019 (the last year before the pandemic), when just under 42,000 were recorded. In 2021, purchases abroad totaled 94,410 units, 35% more than in 2020 (69,943), company sources have assured the Efe agency.
German and diesel cars
The type of car that is most purchased is usually about eight years old on average, with CO2 emissions of 146 grams and a diesel engine.
By segments and nationalities, the most demanded models in our environment are from German and premium brands. Thus, the BCA report anticipates that between July and December 2021, Volkswagen led the ranking of imports (17.2% of the total), followed by models from Mercedes (15%), BMW (13%) and Audi (11, 7%).
77% percent of purchases are made by individuals and the rest by professionals (their operations have risen 136% compared to 2019), who are dedicated to the youngest vehicles, 4.9 years on average.
