For yet another month, the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) announces the latest results. In this case, this is the data collected until September. From this report, the truth is that there are several details to take into account: the three giants continue to be above the rest of the operators and that company changes rose by 11.9% in Spain.
There are operators that are above the other telecos, and in Spain, the three big brands do not give up. In fact, as these data compiled by the CNMC demonstrate, nine out of every ten lines are in the hands of Movistar, MasOrange and Vodafone. And not only on mobile, but also on fixed broadband lines.
Three brands above the rest
Movistar, MasOrange and Vodafone are the three operators that have the most lines in the current Spanish market. Specifically, these three brands managed to concentrate 90.5% of mobile lines in September: Movistar with 26.72%, Vodafone with 21.27% and MasOrange with 42.52%. However, there are also results that are not very popular among these operators.
For example, Vodafone and MasOrange recorded a negative balance in terms of portability. The operator -10,441 and MasOrange was left with -70,625 lines. On the other hand, the operator Movistar added 22,676 numbers and the OMVs obtained 58,390 lines.
And, on the other hand, it must be taken into account that the MasOrange group registered a net loss of 109,537 mobile lines compared to the previous month. On the Vodafone side, this operator added 64,102 lines and Movistar added 57,019 mobiles when compared to the data recorded in August.
Despite all this, the operator born from the merger between Orange and MasMovil remains ahead, since it is the brand with the most active mobile lines: 25.63 million. Next is Movistar with 16.11 million and Vodafone with 12.81 million lines. For this reason, there is no doubt that they concentrate practically the entire market. Above all, if you take into account that low-cost brands like Digi only have 9.49% of the total. Furthermore, it must be taken into account that this MVNO is the one that stands out the most within the group of virtual mobile operators.
Fiber continues to grow
Rates with DSL and HFC technologies continue to plummet, for example, in September each of these options fell by 18,540 and 4,209 lines, respectively. And, on the fiber side, it grew by 36,617 new lines, reaching 15.6 million lines. This represents a whopping 88.6 of the total.
Regarding the monthly gain of fixed broadband lines until September 2024, these are the data from the CNMC: 5.5 for Movistar, 15.2 for Vodafone, -61.1 for MasOrange and 61.6 for the rest of operators. Despite these results, the MasOrange group is a leader in fiber optic options. More than anything because it accumulates 6.64 million FTTH lines, while its other two major rivals have the following figure: Movistar with 5.55 million (share of 35.58%) and Vodafone with 1.59 million lines (share 10.24%). What is clear is that they also accumulate a large part of the total share of the current fiber market in our country, in this case the share of the red operator Zegona being lower.
