This is how the Apple Maps Nearby function works on the Apple Watch, iOS and CarPlay

Apple Maps has a handy Nearby feature that you can view on iPhone, iPad Apple Watch and CarPlay. You can read all about it in this tip.

With the special Nearby function you can immediately see which interesting locations are near you. You can use it on iPhone, Apple Watch and in the car via CarPlay. That is how it works.

This is how you use Nearby on iOS

You can use the Nearby function of Maps in various ways on an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. In addition to the method below, the function also works with the separate Nearby widget of the Maps app. You can read more about how to add these to the widget screen in our separate explanation article about widgets.

To view the Nearby feature in the standard Maps app, on iPhone and iPad, do the following:

  1. Open the Maps app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the search bar.
  3. Under the Find Nearby heading, tap a location. You can scroll horizontally for more categories.
  4. You can now tap nearby locations in the list.

This is how Nearby works on the Apple Watch

You can also use Nearby suggestions on the Apple Watch. It works like this:

  1. Open the Maps app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Now tap on the Search option.
  3. Even if you have already opened the map, you can call up Nearby. You do this by pressing the screen firmly and tapping Search here.
  4. Select one of the four categories.
  5. Choose one of the subcategories to open the list of nearby shops and eateries.

This is how Close works in CarPlay

Apple’s in-car interface, CarPlay, also uses Nearby suggestions. That is how it works:

  1. Open the Maps app.
  2. Tap Destinations at the bottom left.
  3. Choose a category and select a destination. You can now navigate to it too.
