Since iOS 16, the Home app has a completely new look and is accompanied by new functions. In this tip you can read how you can adjust the layout of the Home app. This way you have the most important rooms within easy reach.

The Home app in iOS 16 no longer shows the rooms in your house as separate pages. Instead, you view them in one large overview. You can put your favorite accessories at the top and a rarely used room at the bottom. This way the most important buttons are closer. Read more about adjusting the Home app layout here.

Adjust home app layout: most important rooms at the top

If you’re not happy with the current layout of the Home app, you can change it. This specifically concerns the Home tab where you view and operate all rooms and accessories. If you make the change on one device, it will sync with your other devices. So you don’t have to change it on all your devices. It is also synchronized with your housemates.

By default, this is the order that Apple uses:

  • Cameras (if equipped)
  • Scenes
  • Favorites (your favorite accessories)
  • Individual rooms

So you can choose to put a frequently used room at the top. Or the cameras section at the bottom, if you don’t have to look at it every time. The camera section takes up a lot of space, so we can imagine that you want to lower it a bit.

This is how you adjust the Home app layout:

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the three dots at the top right and choose Reorder sections.
  3. Drag the rooms and parts into the correct order. What you see at the top of the list also appears at the top of the overview.
  4. Finished? Tap Done. It may take a while for the changes to be reflected on other devices.

Create a custom home app

You might think you had to tap Change Home View to control the Home app layout, but that’s a different function. This allows you to adjust the order of individual accessories. If you tap on that, the icons will start to wobble. You can then rearrange the accessories within a room by dragging them. This also applies to the scenes, which you can put in any desired order. The only exception are the first two scenes in the Scenes section, as they show suggestions for your created scenes based on time and time of day. You can turn off scene suggestions by pressing and holding one of the first two scenes and choosing Hide scene suggestions.

Finally, you can use the Change home view button to adjust the size of HomeKit buttons. You can read exactly how that works in our separate tip.

It is possible to tinker endlessly with the Home app layout to tailor it exactly to your home. It’s also important to take a look at your favorite HomeKit accessories. These do not have to be in the same room and you can still view them in one overview. Check out our tip to discover how to favorite HomeKit accessories.
