Save credit card information on iPhone
If you want to pay with your credit card while shopping online, you have two options: use Apple Pay on the web (if a store supports it) or enter your credit card information. If you don’t use Apple Pay or the retailer doesn’t offer it, you can make things easier for yourself by saving your credit card information in iCloud Keychain. You will then immediately have all the necessary information at hand.
- Save credit cards
- Add and scan
- Remove credit card
- Manage credit cards on Mac
- Prevent autofill
- Other personal information
Nowadays you can safely store all your credit card information on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. The information is synced between your devices via iCloud, so you always have it with you. The data you can store is:
- Name on the card
- Card number
- Expiration date
- Security code (since iOS 16)
- Optional description
With this information you can easily make online purchases. To view the data, you must always authenticate yourself via Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode or password. This means that no one can see your credit card details unless they know your access code or password.
It only works with credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, American Express) and not with regular debit cards (such as Maestro or VPay).
If you are looking for general information about using iCloud Keychain on the iPhone and iPad, we obviously have it too.
Store credit cards in iCloud Keychain
To save credit card information in iCloud Keychain going forward, take the following steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Safari > Autofill.
- Turn on the switch for Credit Cards.
The next time you enter your credit card information on a website in Safari, you will be given the option to save it automatically. If you choose this, you no longer have to fill this in manually. If you want to change data (for example because you have received a new card with a new expiry date), you can do so via these steps and choose Saved credit cards.
Add and scan a credit card with the iPhone camera
You can go to Settings > Safari > Autofill > Saved Credit Cards to manually add a new credit card.
The nice thing is that you don’t even have to manually enter credit cards on your iPhone. You can also scan credit card details with the iPhone camera:
- Following the steps above, go to Settings > Safari > Autofill > Saved credit cards.
- Tap the option Add credit card > Use camera.
- The camera opens and a frame appears on the screen. Make sure your credit card fits within the frame and the iPhone will automatically recognize the number and validity.
- Enter any missing information (such as your security code on the back) and a recognizable name.
Remove credit cards from iCloud Keychain
If you want to remove a credit card from iCloud Keychain at a later time, proceed as follows:
- Go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Safari > AutoFill > Saved Credit Cards.
- Enter your PIN or use Touch ID or Face ID to access the secure information.
- You will now see the list of credit cards. Swipe left on the card you want to delete or tap Edit and select the card(s) to delete.
Manage credit cards on Mac
You can also use iCloud Keychain on Mac. We now explain how to manually add and remove a credit card on Mac.
- Go to Safari on Mac.
- In the menu bar, click Safari > Settings.
- Go to the Forms tab. You will now see the Credit Cards item in the list. The checked box indicates that credit card information will be automatically filled in on web forms.
- Click Change to see which credit cards you have registered. You can optionally add a new credit card manually or remove an existing credit card.
You may have noticed that in macOS the feature is called Forms, while in iOS it is called AutoFill.
Prevent Safari from automatically filling in your credit card
If others have access to your iPhone or iPad, you may not want credit card information to be filled in automatically. You can also disable this:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Safari > Autofill.
- Turn off the switch for Credit Cards.
You can also indicate that Safari is no longer allowed to enter names, passwords and other contact information on forms. Your credit card details are stored, but this prevents it from being filled in automatically.
Store other personal information
Not only can you have credit card information automatically filled in by iCloud Keychain. It works the same way with other personal information such as name, address and place of residence. These are details that you often have to enter when you place an online order, but fortunately Safari can also do this for you automatically.
If this does not work automatically, you can force this by entering your own data:
- Go to the Settings app on the iPhone or iPad
- Tap Safari > AutoFill.
- Tap My Info and choose yourself from the contact list.
The next time a form on a website asks for your details, you can have it filled in automatically.
