Give books as gifts on iPhone and iPad
Do you want to give someone a book as a gift without having to leave the house? Then choose a digital book, which the recipient can read via the Apple Books app on the iPhone and iPad. You may already know that you can give apps as gifts to friends, but it also works with books from the Books Store.
- From iPhone and iPad
- What about the Mac?

Give iBooks as a gift on iPhone and iPad
Already have a nice book in mind? Giving books as a gift works as follows:
- Open the Books app on your iPhone or iPad. If the Books app is not on your device, you must first install it from the App Store.
- Go to the Book Store tab and find the book you want.
- Choose a book to see more details.
- Tap the gift icon (see image).
- Enter a recipient and a personal message.
- Enter the date on which the book should be delivered.
- Pay and you’re done.
On the specified day, the recipient will receive an email with instructions to download for free. So you pay for the book and the recipient can then download the book via their Apple ID. You don’t need to know the recipient’s Apple ID. The email address with which you can reach the recipient is sufficient.
It can be a nice last-minute gift if you really couldn’t find anything else. But there is a limitation. The gift is only valid in the country where you purchased the book. If you want to give someone from Belgium books from the Book Store as a gift, you will need to have a Belgian Apple ID with a linked payment method.
Give books as gifts on the Mac
Unfortunately, giving books as gifts is no longer possible from the Mac. There is a button for this, but you will receive a message that you must complete it on your iPhone or iPad.
