You can set reading goals in the Books app, so that you can ensure that you read more often in a playful way. It is available for reading books and audio books. By default, your reading goal is set to 5 minutes, but you can also increase it to no less than 1440 minutes per day!

Reading goals in the Books app

Do you have good intentions to read more often? Then the Books app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac will help you with that. You can set reading goals, where you can choose how many minutes per day you want to spend. You will also see how many books you have already read this year and you can also adjust this goal. If you wish, you can share your reading achievements with friends or on social media. You cannot earn badges, nor can you challenge friends.

Set reading goal per day

You can set a certain number of minutes to read for each day. By default this is set to 5 minutes, but you can easily change this.

To set a reading goal in minutes per day:

  1. Open the Books app in iOS 13 or later.
  2. Go to the Reading Now tab.
  3. Scroll down to Reading Goals.
  4. You can now see how many minutes you have read.
  5. Tap Adjust target.
  6. Choose a value between 1 and 1440 minutes (this equals 24 hours).

Set books by year

You can also set how many books you want to read per year. This is only possible after you have read at least one book. You can set a value between 1 and 365, so the latter would equate to reading one book per day. In an overview you can see how far you have progressed. By default, Apple assumes that you want to read 3 books per year.

  • Review your reading goal using the steps above.
  • Immediately below it you can see how many books you have already read.
  • Tap Adjust target to change it.

Disable reading targets

Don’t like the reading goals at all and don’t want to receive notifications? Then you can turn them off.

How to disable reading goals:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to Books.
  3. Turn off the switch under Reading Goals.

You will not see reading indicators in ‘Reading now’ and you will not receive any notifications.

If you still want to continue using the reading goals, but no longer receive notifications, you can:

  1. Tap your account picture in the top right corner of the app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Turn off the switch under Reading Goals.

With this you do not turn off the reading goals themselves, but only the notifications.

If you don’t want to read any books on your iPhone or iPad at all, you can also simply delete the Books app. If you change your mind at a later time, you can always restore the app again. You can read how removing standard apps works in another tip.

Share reading goals with others

Are you proud of having achieved your goal? Then you can share it with friends. Review your reading goal by following the steps above, and use the Share button to send a message to others via email, iMessage, Slack, or whatever other service you prefer.
