AirPlay on the Apple Watch
You can easily choose music with your Apple Watch and play it via AirPlay on a speaker or HomePod near you. This allows you to easily pause the music or choose another song. This works with AirPlay speakers, but this is also possible with the Apple TV.

Apple Watch and AirPlay
Because there is no headphone jack on the Apple Watch, you will always have to stream music wirelessly to earbuds or a speaker. The built-in speaker of the Apple Watch is not good enough to listen to music. Fortunately, the Apple Watch also supports AirPlay, so you can play music from the Apple Watch wirelessly on a speaker that supports this. AirPlay is Apple’s way of streaming media.
Use AirPlay with your Apple Watch
Ready? AirPlay on the Apple Watch works as follows:
- Open the Music app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap On iPhone at the very top and choose an album or song you want to play via AirPlay.
- On the song playback screen, tap the AirPlay icon at the bottom left.
- Choose the speaker where you want to play the music.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to select multiple speakers at the same time. If you only want to connect to a set of wireless earbuds, for example, you can also use the AirPlay button in the Control Center on the Apple Watch. You can open this by swiping up from the bottom of the watch face.
In addition to the Music app, you can also choose a speaker via AirPlay via the Current app. This is a built-in app that allows you to pause or fast forward music. You cannot select music with this app, but only control it. These automatic music controls on the Apple Watch appear as soon as you play music on your iPhone.
This makes the Apple Watch a handy remote control for the music equipment in your home. If you also have a HomePod at home, you can also control the music on that speaker in the Current app. In another tip we explain everything about playing music with and on your Apple Watch.
