Apart from the operating system that is part of our computer, we must perform certain maintenance on the software that we install here. Specifically, we are referring to the updates that we should carry out on all these programs periodically.

The truth is that today we have several ways to keep all the software that is part of our equipment updated. As time goes by, this becomes more and more important, not only to have the latest features released, but also for security reasons. In fact, Microsoft’s own operating system tries to give us a hand in this regard, and there are also certain programs that will update themselves.

Regarding other solutions, we will be forced to check by hand if we have the latest version at all times. There are even applications especially indicated to help us automatically update all this software. With everything and with this, below we are going to talk to you about a very useful simple command that you can execute in Windows at any time.

It must be taken into consideration that some programs include their own update checks that they carry out from time to time. On the other hand, there are those that send us certain notifications when new versions are presented. The importance of these updates that we mentioned is key. Sometimes they send us new functions, in addition to patching security problems or errors of any other type. Likewise, sometimes they introduce unwanted functions. In most cases it is a good idea to install updates as soon as they are released.

How to see the latest versions of programs in Windows

However, below we are going to show you a simple trick that allows us to see the latest versions available for each of the programs you have installed in Windows. All this through a command from Microsoft’s own operating system, which saves us from having to use third-party tools. Specifically, here we are referring to a useful package manager called winget.

In this case we find a Windows package manager that offers us multiple functions through its different parameters. For example, we have the possibility of using it to install programs or update them from the command line. But in this case we are going to talk to you about one of the great utilities of winget. Basically we mean the possibility for you to perform your own checks to inform us if there are updates available for most of the programs installed on the PC.

This is actually a command built into the most recent versions of Windows, so we can run it immediately. Thus, in order to take a look at the functionality that we mentioned regarding the available program updates, we open a command prompt window. To do this, we write CMD in the search box on the taskbar and run the application with administrator permissions. Here we enter the following command:

winget list --upgrade-available

At that moment the tool starts working and checks the installed programs in its database.

winget programs

All in order to find out if there are updates available to display it on the screen. Almost immediately on the screen we will see all the applications in a list. It is made up of the name of the program, its installed version and the latest version available at that time.

In addition, from here we will also have the possibility of making these updates through the following command:

winget upgrade NOMBRE
