Add workout on the Apple Watch
Keeping track of all your sports activities is very easy if you have an Apple Watch. The standard Workout app in combination with the Activity app keeps track of how many calories you burn and how many minutes you have trained. The Activity app rewards you with all kinds of medals for it. But then you have to record your training and it can happen that you forget it. However, adding or editing afterwards is possible.
- Add workout
- Delete workout
- Add workouts in iOS 12 and earlier
- Workout reminders
Add workout
This is how you can add a workout afterwards:
- Go to the Health app on iPhone.
- Tap Explore > Activity > Workouts.
- Tap Add details.
- Choose your sport and the start and end time.
- You can optionally enter calories burned and distance manually.
- Tap Add.
After saving, it may take a few moments for the workout to appear in the Activity app. Restart it if necessary to make the data visible. In the Activity app, the data you added through the Health app is grayed out in the tables for your red and green ring. The data does count towards filling these rings.
The only drawback is that heart rate data is not available for manually added workouts. You cannot add other data such as average pace. However, adding a workout manually can be worthwhile, because the most important data can simply be entered.
Delete workout
If you have done a workout that you do not want to count later, you can delete it. This works as follows:
- Go to the Activity app on your iPhone.
- Go to the Workouts tab.
- Scroll to the workout you want to delete.
- Swipe on the workout and tap Delete.
It may take a while for the data to be removed from the Activity app as well. The number of training minutes may remain.
Add workout in iOS 12
If you have an iPhone with iOS 12 or an earlier version, adding a workout works slightly differently. Again, you manually add a workout via the Health app, but the steps look different.
- On the paired iPhone, open the Health app.
- Tap the Data button at the bottom and swipe down the page so that the search function appears at the top.
- In the search function, type in Workouts and then choose the option that appears.
- At the top right, tap the plus sign.
- Now choose the type of activity you want to add. You have a lot more options here than in the standard Workout app.
- Depending on the type of workout, you enter the number of calories, the distance and the duration. It is not mandatory to enter the number of calories or the distance if you do not know it. Of course you can always make an estimate.
- The length of your workout determines how many minutes are added to your workout ring in the Activity app.
- To save the workout, tap Add.

Delete Workout in iOS 12 and earlier
If you have entered the workout incorrectly or if you want to delete a workout manually for another reason, you can do so:
- Open the Health app and go to Data.
- Swipe down until search appears and tap Workouts.
- Tap Show all data.
- Choose Edit and tap the red symbol on the left to delete the relevant workout.
- Finally, select the Clear workout and data option.
Workout reminders
Since watchOS 5, Apple also has the workout reminders on the Apple Watch. This prevents you from forgetting to start a workout. After about ten minutes of walking or running, you will be asked if you are doing a workout. If that is indeed the case, the entire workout will be recorded from the start, including the ten minutes you worked out before the notification. However, this does not always work. In addition, you may have missed this notification or that you have done a workout that is not supported. You can still manually add a workout using the steps above.
