Schedule email on iPhone in Apple’s Mail app: send email later
Do you come up with a good proposal late at night to share with your colleagues, but you don’t want to send them anything that late? Or do you have news that you only want to share with others from a certain time? Then it can be useful to schedule an email. You can schedule an email with Apple’s Mail app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can read everything about sending an email later with an iPhone here.

This is what you need to know about scheduling emails
Before we start, we would like to share a useful tip about scheduling email messages. It is required that your device is online when the email is scheduled. This is because a message is stored on your device until it is sent and not on a server. For example, if you plan to take a plane trip where you do not have internet, keep this in mind. If your iPhone is offline at the scheduled time, the email will not be sent later.
You have several options when it comes to a time. The Mail app suggests two later times, but you can also choose a day and time yourself. There is no limit to how far in advance you can plan. So it can also be done in a year. Useful: you can also indicate a time zone in which you want to schedule emails. This is useful if you or your contact are in a different time zone and you want to continue talking at ‘normal’ times.
Sending an email later on the iPhone, requires the standard Mail app iOS 16. On the iPad and Mac you need iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura or newer respectively.
iPhone and iPad: Schedule email in the Mail app
To send an email later on the iPhone, follow these steps:
- Open the Mail app and write an email as you always do. Also enter the recipient(s).
- Do not press the blue send button. Instead, hold it down for a moment until you see the menu appear.
- Select a suggested moment or choose one yourself.
- If you choose a time yourself, you can also choose a different time zone. To see this option, tap the time first.
Once scheduled, you can find the message under the new Send Later mailbox. You can open the email and change or cancel the sending time. Unfortunately, it is not possible to adjust a scheduled email. If you want to do that, you must first cancel the scheduling. The message then becomes a draft, after which you can edit and reschedule it.
Schedule email on Mac
You can also schedule an email on the Mac. You need macOS Ventura or newer for this. That is how it works:
- Open the Mail app and write an email as you always do. Also enter the recipient(s).
- At the top left you will find the send button, but do not click on it. Instead, click the little arrow to the right of the submit button.
- Select a suggested moment or choose one yourself.
- If you choose a time yourself, you can also choose a different time zone.
You can also view your email on the Mac after scheduling. To adjust it, you must first cancel the scheduling. You can then edit your post from your drafts.
If you accidentally sent an email too early, you can unsend a sent email. This is also called retracting an email. You can read how that works in a separate tip.
