Twitter messages sorted by time
By default, the Twitter app shows the best tweets first. This means that tweets with a lot of interaction (likes and comments) will appear at the top of your timeline as soon as you open the app. It is not entirely clear which criteria carry the most weight, but it certainly has something to do with popularity. You may miss the tweets of people who are important to you.
In addition, there is also a normal chronological timeline, so that all tweets are in the order in which they were posted. In this tip you can read how to get your chronological timeline back from Twitter, both in the Twitter app for iOS and via the website.
- Chronological on iPhone and iPad
- Favorite accounts only
- Chronologically on the web
Twitter timeline chronologically on iOS
To set up your Twitter timeline chronologically, follow these steps:
- Open the Twitter app on your iOS device
- Choose the account for which you want to adjust the setting, in case you have multiple accounts.
- Tap the house at the bottom left to go to the timeline.
- Now tap the two asterisks at the top right.
- Choose Most Recent.
Unfortunately, there is little you can do via the Content Preferences link. For example, you can indicate here in which languages you want to see the recommended (= algorithmic) tweets. You can also ignore accounts and keywords here. Don’t see the button with the two asterisks? It may help to force close or reinstall the app.
Favorite accounts only
There’s another way to ensure your timeline isn’t dictated by an algorithm: by pinning lists. Create a Twitter list of your favorite accounts and then pin them:
- Go to your profile page and tap Lists.
- Choose a list (or create one).
- Tap the pin icon.
- Go back to your timeline and you will see the lists at the top of the screen. Swipe sideways to view them.
Twitter timeline chronologically on the web
Twitter can also display the timeline on the web in such a way that the best tweets are at the top. If you want to see these chronologically, you have to adjust this separately for the web. You do this as follows:
- Go to Twitter.com in the web browser.
- Click on the button with the stars at the top right of the timeline.
- Choose See the latest Tweets instead. The timeline title changes from Home to Newest Tweets.
All tweets are now shown in chronological order in your timeline. The most recent tweet from accounts you follow will therefore simply be at the top.
