The iPhone and iPad have a good built-in speaker, with which you can listen to music or watch films and series. The speaker can be set quite loudly, which may be undesirable in certain situations. Fortunately, you can do something about this since iOS 18.2, because Apple has added the Volume Limiting function. This function can also be the solution if your speaker suddenly sounds much too quiet, because by switching it off you can turn the volume back up to maximum.
Volume Limit: Set maximum iPhone speaker volume
The Volume Limit function allows you to determine the maximum volume of the built-in iPhone speaker. This maximum volume only applies to audio such as music, films, series, podcasts and other media. Other sounds coming from your iPhone speaker, such as phone calls, notifications, alarms, ringtones, and more, are not affected by this setting.
The volume limitation is useful if, for example, your child is watching a movie on the iPad and you want to prevent him or her from turning it up extra loudly. By limiting the maximum volume, it can never be set to deafeningly loud (accidentally or otherwise).
It can also happen that the function is accidentally enabled and your iPhone speaker suddenly sounds quieter than normal. In that case you can disable the function in a few steps.
Here’s how to find the Volume Limit feature, with iOS 18.2 and newer:
- Go to Settings > Hearing & Feel.
- Scroll down to the heading Built-in speaker.
- Tap Volume Limit.
- Turn on the switch for Limit maximum volume.
- Drag the slider to the desired maximum volume. You can adjust it from 20% to 90% of the original maximum volume of the speaker.
There are separate settings for listening to music through headphones. Under the heading Headphone Safety you can reduce loud noises and see how many loud noise warnings you have received.
