You may not have known these Flitsmeister tips that make the app even better. Always use a car holder if you use Flitsmeister on the road. The app is suitable for the Netherlands and Belgium. If you are going to tour Europe, check the Flitsmeister website to see which countries certain functions work in.

#1 Automatic start and stop
The great thing about Flitsmeister is that you hardly have to take any action, because the app mainly revolves around notifications and instructions on the screen. So you don’t have to constantly tap buttons while driving. To make it even easier to use, you can set the app to start and close automatically when you go on the road and stop, respectively. The app uses the motion sensor for this, among other things, so that it can see more accurately whether you are still on the road. You can find the option through the app’s settings. Once switched on, you no longer have to worry about it.
Do you not want the app to always see your location, but do you want the app to start automatically in the car? Then you can automatically start Flitsmeister with an automation. That only works if you have a car kit or CarPlay. You can read how it works in our tip. To stop the app automatically, we recommend using that Flitsmeister function.
#2 Install the CarPlay app
Flitsmeister also has a CarPlay app. This allows you to navigate via your car radio and the messages appear directly on the infotainment screen of your car. The advantage is that you can also receive the notifications while navigating with another CarPlay navigation app, such as Google Maps or Apple Maps. Unfortunately, not all tips from this article also work for CarPlay.
As soon as you connect your iPhone to your CarPlay system, the app immediately appears on your CarPlay home screen. Do you want to move it to another page? Check out our tip for setting up CarPlay apps.
We and Flitsmeister regularly receive questions about when Flitsmeister will receive support for the CarPlay dashboard. That would be handy to have, because that way you can see Flitsmeister together with your music and any agenda. That it is not there is partly due to the requirements of the developer and the limitations of Apple. Read more about it in our article about Flitsmeister on the CarPlay dashboard.
#3 Pay parking fees via Flitsmeister
Paying for your parking session via your mobile is not only easy, but sometimes also cheaper than at the regular post. The advantage of paying with an app is that you pay per minute. Some municipalities allow you to put money in the meter per hour or per half hour, so that you sometimes lose too much. You can also pay your parking fee with Flitsmeister. For this, the app works together with 4411, a Belgian service that also works in the Netherlands.
You can add multiple license plates to the app and pay by direct debit or credit card. In Flitsmeister you can view an overview of your recent parking transactions. There you can see when, where and with which license plate you parked. Of course the costs are also included. Flitsmeister charges a fee of €0.25 per transaction. Please note that Flitsmeister may not work in all areas. We have experienced that Flitsmeister could not find a parking zone, while another app could.
#4 Night mode: always or automatically?
Flitsmeister also has a night mode. If you often drive in the dark, such a white screen can be quite dazzling. The night mode ensures that the screen is not too distracting, because the colors are a lot more soothing. You can find the settings for this under the special Night mode menu in the settings.
You can set the night mode so that the app switches automatically, but you can also choose to always have the night mode on. Turn off Automatic first before you can always have night mode on. And good to know: the night mode also affects the display of the map in the CarPlay version of Flitsmeister.
#5 Tactile cues on Apple Watch
Unfortunately, Flitsmeister no longer has an Apple Watch app, but that does not mean that you no longer benefit from the watch in combination with Flitsmeister. The notifications simply appear on your watch. Flitsmeister also has a setting to make the notifications on the Apple Watch extra tangible. You can enable this via Sound options in the app’s settings, so that you no longer miss a notification.
Please note that it is prohibited in the Netherlands to use a smartwatch behind the wheel. If you feel a message coming in, look at your iPhone in the holder or at CarPlay to see what Flitsmeister has to say. Pull over to use your Apple Watch legally.
#6 Adjust advanced settings
Don’t have an Apple Watch? Then there are all kinds of other settings that you can take advantage of. Via Advanced settings of Flitsmeister you determine yourself which sound will sound for different types of warnings. You can also set how far in advance you are warned. For average speed checks, for example, you can set a sound as soon as you drive too fast. This way you can be sure that you keep your average speed on the route low and you don’t have to look at the screen every time.
Flitsmeister regularly adds new functions to this already extensive overview. So it pays to take a peek after an update to see if there is anything in it. At the very bottom of the advanced settings screen you will find experimental options. These are sometimes very specific to one environment and may not always work properly. The developer sometimes invites users to test additional options. Check whether there are any invitations under the heading Extra functionalities.
If you use the Flitsmeister navigation, you can share your ETA with just a few taps. ETA stands for Estimated Time of Arrival and therefore indicates an estimated time of arrival. To do this, tap the button with the time at the bottom right during navigation and choose Share my location. You can then share the route via a channel of your choice, such as WhatsApp or iMessage. The receiver then sees your location live and knows exactly when you will arrive at your destination.
#8 Speed limit for trailer
Flitsmeister had a special function for a while to automatically adjust the displayed maximum speed if you had a trailer. This depended on the weight of your trailer. At the time of writing, February 2021, that feature is not in the app. In a forum post, Flitsmeister says that they are working on an updated version of this feature. It has therefore temporarily disappeared.
Are you reading this article and do you see the function in your app? That means that Flitsmeister has released the updated feature. Let us know via the feedback form and we will adjust this article as soon as possible!
#9 Notifications from emergency services
Flitsmeister also provides warnings for ambulances and other emergency services. This gives you a large clear message on the screen that an ambulance is approaching, so that you know early whether you have to pull over or not. The function also shows how close the ambulance is. It is important to react quickly and correctly when emergency services arrive and this function helps you with that. Check if this feature is enabled in Advanced Settings > Auxiliary Vehicles.
#10 Manage safety cameras
With the app you can easily report a (mobile) speed camera, so that you help and warn other users. But did you know that you can also manage speed cameras? You will see an overview of speed cameras in your area on a map. You can therefore simply pass on changes at home from the couch or indicate whether a speed camera is no longer there. If there is a new speed camera in your area that is not yet in the app, tap the Add speed camera option at the bottom.
It is possible to mute certain speed cameras in the app. This is useful for fixed speed cameras that you often drive past and that you really know by now. To mute a speed camera, open the Map tab at the bottom right. Search the map for the relevant post and tap the icon. Then tap the sound icon to mute the notifications for that specific pole.
