How to fix ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED Chrome error on Windows

It has happened to all of us that we open a website and the browser gives us an error message. Some indicate some serious problem, some resolve themselves, and others are simple but require intervention. In this article we talk about one of those very simple errors, but that require a solution: we show you how to solve the ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED error.

What is this bug?

Error codes in google chrome (and most chromium based browsers) are the same, and are a short description of the problem. ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED means “Error: Proxy connection failed”

What is a proxy?

A proxy server is a service that gives you a little more anonymity when surfing the net. Every time you enter a website, it can easily identify your geographical location. No site has access to your exact address (unless you give it to them yourself), but all websites can identify your city, state, country, service provider, and other data.

A proxy server prevents this from happening by giving websites the server’s information instead of yours. If you use a proxy with a server in the United States, the websites you visit will think that you are in the United States. However, to use a proxy, you need to get one from the many lists out there, and configure it correctly in your browser.

proxy connection

When you enter a website, your computer connects to a server. The server is basically a computer that hosts the website, and when you connect to it, that computer sends you the content of that website so you can open it in your browser.

When you connect to a proxy, the proxy itself acts as an intermediary. Instead of connecting to the website server, your computer connects to the proxy server, and the proxy is what “talks” to the website server. Basically, the proxy forms a chain in which the information has to pass through several parts before reaching you, which makes you more difficult to trace.

Why does this error occur?

Since a proxy connection forms a chain, this also means that if even one part of it fails, the entire connection goes down. If the proxy can’t connect to the website, the connection will fail, and if you can’t connect to the proxy, the connection will also fail. This error indicates that one of those two things has happened.

Usually, this error is temporary and resolves itself after a few minutes, but if you’re reading this article, chances are you’ve already tried waiting and it didn’t work. Here are a few solutions that you can try if the problem persists.

  1. Find another proxy server. Proxy servers tend to go down, so the easiest solution is to search for the best proxies out of the many on the internet.

  2. Check the configuration. Most proxies optimize to be easy to use, but you still need to configure some parameters which can be tricky. Check that you are entering all the data correctly.

  3. Use a VPN. A proxy and a VPN are two very different services, but the ultimate purpose is the same: Sites cannot track your activity. If you’re having trouble using proxy servers, it may be worth paying for a more comprehensive service.

  4. Renew the IP address. Depending on your country, provider, and router; you may be able to renew your IP address easily.

In this modern world where websites are becoming more invasive, the measures we take to protect our privacy are becoming more drastic. We hope that with this solution you can continue to protect yourself online.
