Microsoft has made it very clear that it has no plans to change its plans in the future and offer free extended support for Windows 10. When October 14, 2025 arrives, that’s the end of the line. If you want to continue receiving support only in the form of security updates, you’ll have no choice but to pay up and sign up for the 1, 2, or 3-year plans at most.

Little by little, users are realizing that continuing on Windows 10 when the computer is compatible with Windows 11 makes no sense and are migrating to the most recent version of the Microsoft operating system.

The latest data from Statcounter confirms that Windows 11 continues to slowly but steadily rise in market share, while Windows 10 is gradually being abandoned by users.

According to this company, Windows 11 currently has a market share of 30%, while Windows 10 has a market share of 66%. The data provided by Statcounter is not official, so it is possible that it is not the same as the one Microsoft works with, figures that it has never made public, unlike Apple, which does, but for different reasons.

Windows 11 on the verge of overtaking Windows 10 on Steam

As mentioned above, the data provided by Statcounter is not official as it is based on usage statistics it collects. The same goes for the data published every month by the video game platform Steam.

According to the usage statistics of this platform, the gap between Windows 11 and Windows 10 has been reduced and is currently only 3%. As we can see in the following image, Steam users with Windows 11 represent 46.63% of the total, while those who still use Windows 10 rise to 49.42%.

Most used operating system Steam

Compared to the last report, we see that Windows 11 has risen by a total of 0.55 points while Windows 10 has dropped by 0.93 points. In addition to Windows 10 and Windows 11, these statistics also show a very curious fact, since the number of users who use Steam with Windows 7 in 64-bit version has risen by 0.02 points, reaching 0.4% of the computers. Windows 8.1 remains at 0.08%, without increasing or decreasing.

Other interesting data from Steam statistics

The report that Steam publishes every year is not limited to just showing which is the most popular operating system, but also shows which are the most used configurations.

As for processors, Intel once again leads the ranking with a 66.80% market share, followed by AMD with 33.15%. This data could change soon as processors with Qualcomm’s ARM architecture begin to reach the market en masse.

The most commonly used memory configuration is 16GB with 47.23% of users, followed by 32GB with 29.38% and in third place 8GB with 11.45% of users.

In terms of graphics, NVIDIA dominates here, taking the top three positions with the RTX 3060 in first place with 5.5%, followed by the GTX 1650 with 4.04% (a graphics card discontinued by NVIDIA at the beginning of this year) and in third place is the RTX 3060 Ti with 3.46% share.

If we talk about the most used resolution, 1920 x 1080 is the most popular with 57.47% of users, followed by 2560x 1440 with 19.36% and closing with 4K resolution with 3.71% market share.
