The big question that many citizens ask is whether where they currently live is in an area that can be flooded, either by sea or by rivers overflowing due to rain. To do this, any user can quickly go to the website of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. Within this page, a map is offered where you can consult a map that shows a prediction of flood zones.
There is no doubt that the large rainfall experienced by DANA has caused one of the great natural disasters of this century in Spain in different parts of the country. As a result of this, it is normal for many to ask themselves the following question: do I live in an area that can flood? To clear up doubts, the National Flood Zone Mapping System (SNCZI) can be of great help.
See if you live in a flood zone
Ask if you live in an area that can be flooded by heavy rains that overflow rivers or by flooding of marine origin. To check this, any user can take a look at the map on the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which specifically This is the SNCZI-IPE (National Flood Zone Mapping System – Inventory of Dams and Reservoirs).
Within this page, the system will load with an interactive map displayed. To get to the information you are looking for, you must click on the ‘Service Tree’ tab shown in the menu of buttons seen at the top. Next, a small window will appear with a multitude of options. Here you can choose between:
- Mapping of flood zones (ZI) of river origin
- You must click on ‘Extent of flood zones’ > With medium or occasional probability or with low or exceptional probability.
- Mapping of flood zones (ZI) of marine origin
- With medium or occasional probability or with low or exceptional probability.
The ideal is to choose the option that shows the areas that have a medium or occasional probability, either due to rain or of marine origin. Basically, because it takes into account data from the last 100 years, while the other tab has the last 500 years as its value. This way you can have a clearer idea of which areas are most at risk of suffering from this problem.
Once it loads, you will be able to move without problems around the map of Spain within this website and check the area in which you live. Keep in mind that areas in yellow are those at risk of flooding. And, on the other hand, you can also consult the ‘River flood danger’ in the last 10, 100 or 500 years. This tab is also within the Service Tree > Cartography of flood zones (ZI) of river origin > Hazard maps. So there are several menus with which you can clear up doubts. In addition, there is a third tab with which anyone can see the maximum flow during the last 2, 5, 10, 25, 100 and 500 years.
