Do you know what processor you have in your PC? It is important that you know this valuable component and in case you consider it necessary to change the thermal paste, we recommend you learn how to change the thermal paste of my PC’s processor? Step by step, a process that we will talk to you about right now.
Why is it necessary to change the thermal paste?
Once you know what the microprocessor is and what it is for, it is essential that you pay attention to the thermal paste that has been applied to this component. Thermal paste is an element designed to speed up the transmission of heat between the heatsink and the processor, helping to keep temperatures under control.
Even so, over time, thermal paste tends to dry out, gradually losing its qualities to properly transmit temperature. Given this, it is essential to replace it with new thermal paste, a process that we will teach you below
How to change the thermal paste of my PC’s processor? Step by Step
The process to change the thermal paste of the computer is quite simple, you just have to take into account certain aspects. Also, make sure you have a screwdriver, the thermal paste, a cloth, and isopropyl alcohol to start the process.
Remove the sink
The heatsink and fan of the processor, is the one that, as its name indicates, will dissipate all the heat coming from the CPU. It is a fundamental piece, since without it the CPU would get too hot and simply not work.
In the same way, as we pointed out before, with the passage of time it becomes necessary to change the thermal paste, the first step to follow for this process being to remove this heatsink. This process is simple, assuming you have a common heatsink.
In most circumstances, the heat sinks have four screws, all you have to do is carefully unscrew each one, after which you should be able to remove it without any problem.
Similarly, you must disconnect the heatsink from the motherboard, in order to clean it later, as you can see in our guide.
Remove the processor from the motherboard socket
This is the process that terrifies most newbies, in any case, if done properly it shouldn’t cause any problems. Removing the CPU is usually quite simple, since in most circumstances regardless of the manufacturer (Intel or AMD) the procedure is similar.
You will find a small lever that is attached to the motherboard, you just have to press it down slightly and naturally it will give way and you can lift it. As you can see, after this the compartment in which the processor is located will be raised, with which you can now remove it.
You must be very careful with the pins, which depending on the brand of the processor will be found either on the motherboard or on the CPU itself. Do not touch them and do not impose force on them at all.
Remove old thermal paste
Before putting new thermal paste on your processor, it will be necessary to remove any traces of the old one. You can do this using a piece of cloth slightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol.
Use the cloth and gradually remove the traces of thermal paste from the processor, do it until there is nothing left. Keep in mind that this process must also be done on the heatsink.
Put the processor back on the motherboard
Once the processor is clean, put it back inside the motherboard, make sure to put it in its correct position, guiding yourself by the guides present both on the motherboard and on the CPU itself, finally fix the processor again.
Apply the new thermal paste to the processor and put the heatsink back on
It is time to apply the thermal paste, you can apply it as you wish, that is, using your fingers, with a screwdriver, with paper, etc. The important thing is that you apply the amount necessary to achieve good dissipation.
Do not exaggerate, with two small dots of just over half a centimeter should be enough for most cases, putting too much thermal paste is not recommended.
Once you have applied the thermal paste, carefully put the heatsink in its final position and screw until it is perfectly positioned. In the same way, reconnect it to the motherboard, after which you will have finished the whole process. Make sure to activate all processor cores from Windows to boost your PC’s performance.
