Boys and adolescents tested with normal insulin levels had 1.5- to 2-fold greater testicular volume compared with those with hyperinsulinemia, a condition of higher than normal blood insulin levels often associated with with type 2 diabetes. Thus, those who were overweight or obese, hyperinsulinemia, or insulin resistant showed lower testicular volume than those who were healthy.

A lower testicular volume is a risk factor for reduced sperm production during adulthood, so the researchers believe that weight loss could help those affected to avoid infertility in the future. “Although the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing worldwide, the impact of obesity and associated metabolic disorders on testicular growth is not well understood,” explained Rossella Cannarella, one of the authors of the article.

He adds: “In this study we found that being overweight or obese was associated with lower prepubertal testicular volume. Furthermore, obesity-related comorbidities such as hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance were found to influence testicular volume before and after puberty.
