Summer is the perfect time to watch anime! We have plenty of time to accumulate episodes and binge with marathons until the body can take it. But there are so many anime that it is very difficult to know which one to choose to start watching. In this guide we recommend the essential anime that you should see if you have never seen it, that type of series that is essential for anyone who likes animation. You’ll see what a good summer!

To make this selection we have taken into account several factors and, above all, we elaborate it so that you can know that, by choosing any of them, you will have guaranteed fun. As you will see, you will find anime of different styles, so if there are several that catch your attention, you can choose the one that best suits the type of series you would like to see.

Attack the titans

Hajime Isayama’s manga has adapted one of the best animes of recent decades. The pacing of the series and the spectacle it provides from the very first episode are hard to beat. It also has the advantage of being visually stunning, with a high level of violence and breathtaking battles. The tension is maintained at all times without knowing if your favorite character will end up being the next one to end up being eaten.

Devoured? Yes, totally devoured and in the most violent way possible. The reason for this is that this anime places its story in a medieval fantasy world where civilizations live locked up in cities from which their inhabitants do not leave for fear of the titans. These are giant-sized creatures with a human appearance, but without any kind of control or emotion. Titans destroy everything in their path and devour people when they come across one.

The protagonist is Eren Yeager, who after suffering blunt trauma in childhood, grows up to become one of the members of the scouting corps. These brave heroes are the ones who leave the cities to carry out missions, obtain resources and those who have the weapons with which they can face the titans. However, Eren will soon discover that everything he knew about the world is very different from reality. And the final battle between humanity and the titans will begin. You can watch Attack on Titan on Amazon Prime Video, as well as on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Anime-Box. Keep in mind that, at the moment, there are 88 episodes.

evangelion

Recommending Evangelion is not easy in view of the way in which Gainax has been complicating viewing over time. But it’s interesting that even with this context, we have to acknowledge that it’s still one of the best anime of all time. The original series is available on Netflix and it is not wasted, since with 26 episodes it marks you in a way that you will not be able to imagine until you see it. We can also tell you that it would not be unusual for you to see any of the chapters twice. The script has such crazy parts that you’ll need two viewings to get your bearings!

In Evangelion, a group of young people use EVA robots to confront the angels that are trying to destroy the world. The situation on the planet is not exactly easy because, 15 years before, the Second Impact, a global catastrophe, occurred. Robot combats are combined with the daily life of students and the personal stories of a group of characters that is already historical. If after watching the series you feel like an extra dose of Evangelion, don’t miss the movies that are available on Amazon Prime Video. When you enter the wormhole of this universe, you will not be able to get out.

Violet Evergarden

As you will see, our list of recommendations includes anime series that have left their mark over time and that, in general, are not exactly very recent. But we also do not want to leave out the great successes of recent years. That is why we recommend the emotional Violet Evergarden, one of the most emotional productions that can be seen within its genre.

It is not a war story per se, but it is developed within a framework that does reflect a conflict. The protagonist is a girl who was used as a weapon in the war and who is now trying to reintegrate into society, although she lacks the ability to socialize and understand feelings. As she works on her first non-fighting job, she will try to understand the words spoken to her by a very special person during the war.

You can see absolutely all the content of this anime on Netflix, both the 13 episodes of the series and the OVA. The good thing is that it is also a short series, so if you intend to watch several animes, this is a good recommendation!

Naruto and One Piece

We have decided to unite them in this section because they may not need as much presentation as the other series and they compete within the same category. It is about two of the most important shonen of all time, two stories of combat, action and adventure.

In One Piece you will follow the adventures of Luffy and the Straw Hat crew as they travel the seas, face villains and try to find treasure. For his part, in Naruto you will meet the young ninja protagonist, who starts from the bottom until he becomes a legend. They are two different styles, but they share many of the fundamental ingredients of the genre. We would also be recommending Dragon Ball, because together they form the holy trinity of shonen anime, but nowadays watching Akira Toriyama’s series in Spain is not easy.

In the case of One Piece, you can find it on Crunchyroll and we already warned you that you are going to need time, because there are hundreds of episodes that you will end up watching if you want to catch up. Naruto, meanwhile, is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll. When you have finished with the original series you can continue watching Shippuden to follow the adventures of the protagonist.

Steins;Gate

This is one of those anime that will make your head explode. We don’t want to tell you too much about the series because there are 24 episodes that are worth enjoying (plus two extras that are also on Netflix). The plot is located in the famous Akihabara neighborhood in Tokyo, where a mad scientist who is very interested in time travel manages to invent a tool with which to send messages to the past. Not only that, but he will also travel through time.

Steins;Gate has succeeded in all the fields in which it has had a presence, be it in the form of a video game, novel or anime. And it is one of those stories that does not lose level in any of the adaptations. If you like brainy stories with surprises, you’ll love it.

Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting!

We have not chosen many sports series for this list, also partly because Spain is not giving much support to this type of production. But we couldn’t resist recommending Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting, a boxing anime that has it all.

The original manga is legendary. The series introduces the young Ippo, who is bullied by his classmates and, after an encounter with a famous boxer, ends up starting training. The concept is classic, but it works on a level that is far above many other sports stories. In addition, the animation, the development of the combats and the way in which the character matures are first class. You have 76 episodes on Netflix that will leave you wanting to buy a punching bag.

Love Live!

What you like is music? You should know that there are many animes in which the songs have extreme importance. The best example of this, which has become an icon for a generation of otakus, is Love Live! This series features a group of high school students who train to try to win the idol competition that is held among all the academic centers in Japan.

There are different series and each of them presents a group of students in a different school. You can enjoy them independently since their characters are not related to each other. You will find Love Live! Sunshine!! on Filmin, while the subsequent series, Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and Love Live! Superstar!! They’re on Crunchyroll. You would only be missing the first series, which is not available in Spain at the moment.

when cicadas cry

If you have a sensitive stomach, be very careful. This is one of the bloodiest and most violent series you’ll ever see, but it’s also one with the most complex, interesting, and convoluted history. It will make you wonder what you are seeing and what is happening, especially when you see its characters react in totally unpredictable ways.

The original series is on Netflix with its 26 episodes, while to see the sequel you will have to go to Crunchyroll, where you will find it under the title Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU.

kakegurui

And finally, we are going to recommend that you get carried away by the crazy battles that take place at the Kakegurui institute, where the long-suffering protagonist will meet some of the most evil minds you can imagine. Due to its crazy characters, the dynamics of battles with stakes involved and the twists that the series has, it was one of the surprises of a few years ago. In addition, the premiere of its sequels has helped it end up becoming a very important brand.

If after watching the anime you still want more, on Netflix you not only have the animated series, but also the live action series, which is really good.

other good anime

If you have already seen the series that we have recommended in the previous points or even if you are looking for some extra recommendation, we are going to end this article with some additional titles. For example, on Disney+ you have Bleach available, as well as its sequel. It is an action series that has also had a great impact over time, as Guardians of the Night is gradually achieving, which is another good recommendation that you have on Amazon Prime Video and Cruncyroll. .

We would like to tell you many other titles, but the bad news is that they are series that are not currently available in Spain, such as the essential Fullmetal Alchemist or Death Note. However, surely with these recommendations you have entertainment to spare!
