Storm apps for your iPhone
If the KNMI declares code orange or red, then you know it: the storm warnings are flying around you. You will be alerted to very strong wind gusts and high wind speeds. What now? With the storm apps for iPhone below you can keep a close eye on the storm and you will also see other weather warnings.
- The Weather in the Netherlands
- Windy
- Weather forecast Netherlands
- Weather plaza
- More apps
There are of course many more weather apps that allow you to track storms. Many people use Buienradar, others are fans of Carrot Weather. It goes too far to list all conceivable apps here again. You’d better check out our round-ups of the best weather apps and the best rain apps for iPhone for that.
The Weather in the Netherlands
The absolute king when it comes to versatility of information. Het Weer in Nederland offers more than thirty (!) weather maps that you can use. Via the Live Weather Station you can see current weather measurements at your location. The app checks where you are based on GPS, but you can also enter this manually. There are also six rain radars: that of Buienradar, plus five others from the KNMI.
Regarding the wind, you get the wind speed in m/s, bft, knots, km/h. When the wind blows hard, it can feel colder, but the app has also thought of that: the maps show the current temperature and the wind chill. With a weather alarm and coast alarm you stay informed if bad weather is approaching. You can also view yesterday’s precipitation and wind force maps and much more. There are nice widgets with weather information for your location.
If one card does not provide enough information, there is always another page that does. Sometimes it takes a while to find, but then you also have something.
Windy
Windy sounds like an app that will tell you everything about storms and strong winds. But Windy can do more. This fast and intuitive weather app contains more than 40 maps with all sorts of detailed information. So it is a bit like ‘The weather in the Netherlands’, which we discussed above, but on an international scale. It is useful for people who have to deal with wind a lot, such as pilots, paragliders, skydivers, kiters, surfers and of course also people who go out during a heavy storm, the so-called storm chasers.
Windy uses global weather models and forecasts such as ECMWF and GFS, supplemented by local providers such as NEMS, AROME and ICON (for Europe) and NAM (for the US).
Weather forecast Netherlands
This well-arranged weather app offers information from the KNMI. The layout of the app is very simple, without overwhelming you with dozens of different radar images, weather maps, and other information you may not need. As far as we are concerned, the strength of the app lies in the notifications for weather warnings. You can set notifications for your province or per region or the entire country. And by tapping on a province, you can see the reason for the weather alarm. It’s not the prettiest app, but it’s worth it because of this warning function.
Weather plaza
Weerplaza was an ugly app for a long time, but in the current version it looks a lot more attractive. The provision of information in extreme weather is very useful. You will receive warning messages with a map, provided with a time. A concise description shows the situation in the country, including thunderstorm radar.
More storm apps for iPhone

-
Rainfall radar – weather (Free, iPhone/iPad/Watch + IAP, iOS 15.0+) – You probably already have this app installed on your device, so we thought it unnecessary to write an extensive explanation about it. The ads can be removed with an in-app purchase.
-
WeatherPro ($0.99, iPhone/Watch + IAPiOS 10.0+) – A favorite for years due to its extensive features, but the future of this app is uncertain due to a previous acquisition.
-
