Photo collage apps
Everyone does it: send photos to family, friends and other people at home. Or you share them with the whole world via Instagram. But much more fun than sending or posting them directly, it is to pimp them a bit first into a nice photo collage, so that you don’t have to send a mountain of 20 photos. A photo collage app can also come in handy if you want to make photo books. You are then not stuck with the (often somewhat dull) layouts of the photo book services.
We think these are the best photo collage apps:
- MOLDIV
- Adobe Express
- Google Photos
- PicsArt
- diptic
- Collage Creator
- Canvas
- Photographer
- Pic Jointer
- Instagramize
- PicStitch

Beware of expensive in-app subscriptions! Photo collage apps are booming business for app developers. Some developers charge $3 per week which equates to over $150 per year! You would normally never spend that much for an app. If you need certain unique features in these apps, you could close them for up to a week, but don’t forget to cancel after that.
The App Store has literally hundreds of apps that let you create your own photo frame. Sometimes as part of a wider photo editing app, sometimes just for collage making. From this large selection, we selected the best apps to make photo collages on your iPhone and iPad.
#1 MOLDIV
MOLDIV is more than a photo collage app, you can also use it as a photo editor. Combine up to 16 photos and apply over 300 filters and 135 magazine layouts to create something beautiful. There are stickers, text effects and patterns for the background. You can also adjust the frames by making them thicker or rounder or by adding more shadow. You can print the collages you make in a photo book, for example.
#2 Adobe Express
If you are an Adobe user, Adobe Express may appeal to you. Formerly called Adobe Spark Post, this app aims to easily create a social media post for Instagram, Snapchat, and the like. You can upload photos and videos and use text in the professionally designed templates. You finish it off with effects and animations. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the photos are automatically optimized for social media. Adobe Express is free to use, but for the nicer templates you have to be a subscriber.
#3 Google Photos
If you prefer to keep the amount of apps on your iPhone limited and use Google Photos, you don’t have to install an extra app. There is also a collage function in Google Photos. It is quite simple but effective. Tap the Library tab, then go to Tools > Collage. Tap, crop or rotate photos and add filters before sharing with friends. Your collage is ready in a few seconds.
#4 PicsArt
PicsArt is a simple app with many (free) options. If you want to make a collage, you can do this very easily by selecting a number of photos. You can immediately choose a layout that you like. You can adjust this later.
Once you have chosen one, you can start customizing the photo collage. Add all kinds of extras such as backgrounds, stickers, text and effects. The only downside to the app is that it often comes with advertisements, which can be annoying when you’re busy editing the photo. By becoming a subscriber you will no longer be bothered by those commercials and you will get more extras that you can add to the collage. The app is suitable for more than making collages; you can also edit photos and draw on photos with it.
PicsArt is one of the most popular collage apps and claims to have over 1 billion downloads. With the Story maker you can easily create a photo collage for your Instagram Story and apart from putting a simple frame around a photo you can also choose traditional and creative layouts.
#5 Diptics
Diptic has stood still for a while, but is now being maintained a bit better by the makers. Diptic is a former App Store App of the Week and is suitable for creating photo and video collages. You can customize every feature of your collage and there are dozens of layouts to choose from. You can choose favorite layouts so you can find them faster. It contains some unique and interesting templates, but you can also choose free-form shapes such as hearts and waves. This is a paid app, but for a few euros you can have a lot of fun. For example, by creating a slideshow of collages with animated transitions. It is also special that you can combine both photos and videos with Diptic.
#6 Collage Maker
Collage Maker contains dozens of unique templates for your photo collages. You can combine up to 16 photos into a classic layout or a special template for posters and the like. You can also adjust the width of the edges and the roundness of the corners. You can also customize the background colors of each template and then add stickers to match the themes of sports, holidays and more. You can also make long collages, like you take out of a photo booth.
#7 Canvas
Canva is a general app to make graphic creations, for example for a birthday invitation, a photo collage or an Instagram Story. You can also use the app on the desktop, so you can continue working at your desk. Canva is free, but it only becomes fun if you are a subscriber because then you have access to many more templates.
#8 Photographer
Fotor is a photo editor that also allows you to create collages. It contains hundreds of special effects designed by professional photographers. You can also create your own designs with the personal collages. Plus, you can place photos wherever you want, then add filters, stickers, text, and more. For when you especially want to get started yourself.

You can combine up to 9 photos into a photo collage, which you can then swipe into place. You can also add text. The app is quite pricey and is therefore best closed for the period of a week at times when you need it.
#10 Instagramize
Instasize is free, but it does show ads that can sometimes be a bit annoying if you’re just editing your photo. The app is quite popular and easy to use. Combine up to 6 photos in a photo collage and then start editing. Adjust brightness and saturation, or purchase additional packs to make your photos even more fun.
#11 Pic Stitch
When you look at Pic Stitch’s features, you might be wondering what you can’t do with this app. More than 300 different layouts, 15 aspect ratios and lots of photo filters, so there’s always something you’re looking for. In addition, Pic Stitch works with both photos and videos. It is even possible to add music to your photo collage!
#12 Split Pic
Split Pic only has a limited number of filters, stickers, and effects, which can be a godsend for those who get confused by too much choice. The free options of the app give you limited options. You get more options for an in-app purchase, as is the case with many more apps from this genre. You can flip photos or blur edges. Collaborate on a collage with others or make one yourself and share the result on social media.
#13 Collageable
If you are looking for a photo collage app that can combine a lot of photos, you must have Collageable. It combines up to 25 photos together. This way you can tell a whole story with your photos. Plus, it’s packed with borders, stickers, and filters. You can also customize the layouts to your liking. You can even touch up your photos with Collageable’s built-in photo editor.
#14 piZap
An easy app with an almost endless amount of layouts. Rectangles, circles, hearts and even a combination of shapes is possible. Apart from collages, this app also contains filters, stickers, frames and borders. With the crop tool you cut out parts of a photo so that you can paste it over another photo. More than 400 fonts and speech bubbles make it fun to add text. Some features require in-app purchases.
#15 Frame Magic
If you don’t feel like making a collage, FrameMagic comes to the rescue. You can create a beautiful collage with photos and videos in a few seconds after choosing your media. There are more than 150 layouts.
#16 PhotoGrid
If you want to combine photos and videos into a collage, PhotoGrid is a good idea. You can edit photos and videos before adding them to a template. You can also blur the background and add watermarks. Also handy: you can synchronize video clips with each other, so that they all run at the same time. With more than 300 templates that you can fill with 15 photos and videos at the same time, it always produces something beautiful. If your video is too long, you can trim it in the PhotoGrid app to make it suitable for social media. You can choose from multiple aspect ratios, for example for an Instagram Story. PhotoGrid is free to download, but a Premium Plan gives you access to more assets, longer videos, and full HD quality. You will also no longer see advertisements. This costs a few tens a year.
#17 PicCollage
PicCollage is an app with hundreds of backgrounds and templates, unique stickers and festive patterns. This way you can create a postcard-like template, with special ways to customize. And it works fast too.
