You can choose in WhatsApp who can add you to group conversations. In this tip you can read how to set this up and what options there are for blocking invitations from WhatsApp groups.

WhatsApp groups can come in handy if you want to make appointments with a large group. They are also often used for neighborhood prevention, so that local residents can keep each other informed of developments in the area. It used to be that anyone who has your number could add you to such a group, whether you wanted to or not. There is something that can be done about this nowadays, because WhatsApp offers the option to block group invitations. You then decide for yourself in which group you do or do not participate.

Block WhatsApp group invites

To set who can add you to a WhatsApp group, follow the steps below. It’s pretty simple. That is how it works:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy and then go to Groups.
  3. Choose here from the desired setting for who can add you to a group.

Manage invitations to WhatsApp groups

You can choose from three options. Here they are:

  • Everyone: This option allows anyone to add you to a group without any restrictions.
  • My contacts: Only people in your address book can add you to a group.
  • My contacts, except…: Select here the people you not to add to a group.

The last option comes in handy if the same person keeps wanting to add you to multiple groups, while you don’t feel like it at all. The option can also be used to prevent anyone from adding you. You do this by choosing My contacts, except > Select all. All contacts are now selected, so no one can invite you to a group conversation.

What if someone really wants to invite you?

If someone wants to invite you without permission, they can send you an invitation directly. A message appears that you cannot be added to the conversation. This invitation is sent in a one-on-one chat, so that you have control over which groups you participate in.
