It is very common today that you want to extend or allocate more space to a hard drive partition, making a backup of the computer’s files.
But, it happens that sometimes, the space that has been allocated to the primary space has become insufficient to keep the operation of Windows 10 stable.
For this reason, people need more storage within it to be able to continue working comfortably with their equipment without having to format or buy another disk. Fortunately, Windows has several tools within the same system, which allow the user to play with the volume of storage devices.
Extend or allocate more space to a hard drive partition using Diskpart
Diskpart is a storage device management tool that is attached to the system as an essential item.
It can be accessed from the “Command Prompt” program, which is associated with the Windows console where commands can be entered.
The command prompt is used, among other things, to find out the version of the Windows operating system you have. In turn, it allows you to find the Windows Server product key.
To run this process, the aforementioned program must be found from the taskbar search engine by typing “cmd”. In this way, an icon will appear represented with a black window and white details inside it, then, select it with right click and choose the option “Run as administrator”.
Another way to enter is through the key command “Start button + R” that will open a window in which the same will be written. Although, to avoid permission problems, the ideal is to enter using the first method, although the second method is just as viable.
Consequently, the famous black window will appear where the words “Diskpart” will be written and “Enter” will be pressed.
Next, the list of system volumes will be displayed, that is, both the partitions and the other storage devices.
Now, look at the volume number of the hard drive partition (for example, volume 1) and type “select volume 1”. This will display the message “Volume 1 is the selected volume” indicating that it has been selected. Then, the word “extend” must be written.
This process will be carried out successfully as long as there is adjacent space, this is obtained by deleting an unused partition or reducing it to obtain unallocated space.
Extend a partition using Windows 10 Disk Manager
This is a program incorporated into the functionalities of Windows 10, which allows you to manage hard drive partitions, and can be located from the start menu or by finding it in the search bar. In this segment, the list of all the devices or volumes within the system will be displayed, both in a list and in graphics.
The list will be located at the top with the letter assigned with the system, as well as other data such as format, total space, free space and health. While in the lower part they will be represented in boxes, in the left part according to the letter from top to bottom, and in the right part, a section with the partitions and space of each one.
Thus, in the segment where the partition of interest is located, we proceed to select it with the right click, which will reveal a series of alternatives. Within which the “Extend volume” or “Extend volume” option will be displayed, which will allow you to increase the amount of space on the partition.
Next, a pop-up window will appear, this is the Windows wizard for the extension or increase of volume of hard disks. Clicking on “Next” will bring up another screen with space allocation options, in which you can select the partition and allocate a total available space.
When configuring the desired space on the disk of interest, proceed to select “Next” and then “Finish” to finish the process.
