Is quantity better than quality? Many times we wonder if we really need so many movies on a streaming platform to which we subscribe, but what is more important is that some of them do not usually exude a certain attraction towards the viewer and it never rains to everyone’s liking. In this context, Netflix is in the crosshairs of many critics as it is the platform with the largest number of subscribers, and some of its productions are strongly attacked.
The world of streaming is booming and emerging in an astonishing way. We have more and more new releases of movies and series that arrive en masse on each platform. But there is one that stands out above the rest and that adds more content than others on a weekly basis. Netflix has become the perfect accompaniment to sit on your couch and watch content of any kind through its hundreds of its own productions and thousands more from third parties.
Its more than 260 million subscribers crown it as the leading streaming platform and, although it has suffered significant losses throughout its history, it remains unbeatable at the top of the ranking. On the other hand, there are many series and movies that have not had much impact and have suffered harsh criticism from the specialized media and from the users themselves. The paradox is that this type of situation triggers a paradox, since those titles that are not at all convincing are usually the most viewed in the catalog.
Two films that succeed in audiences and fail in reviews
We are going to see a clear example of the two films that are currently broadcast on Netflix and that are currently garnering large audience shares around the world, but at the same time they are not being liked by professional critics. We are specifically referring to a newly arrived romantic comedy and an animated feature film for the little ones in the house.
On the one hand, The Mother of the Bride has been positioning itself for two weeks as the most viewed film in Spain in the top 10, as well as in most of the territories in which it is broadcast. At the time of writing, it has dropped to third place, behind Golden Kamuy in second place and Disturbia in first place. Likewise, it has 38,100,000 hours watched and 25,400,000 reproductions, quite a feat, since it practically doubles Madame Web in quantity.
The data seems surprising at first glance, and it really is, but everything changes when we read reviews from movie scoring websites like Rotten Tomatoes, whose film is given 13 points out of 100. The audience is not short either, and they don’t mind. They give more than 14 points. Among the critics’ reviews, it can be seen that it is a “mediocre, boring and disappointing” romantic comedy.
As for the children’s film, Telma, the unicorn, more of the same happens, although with less booing. In the list of most viewed movies we can see that right now it is in fourth position with 12,000,000 hours watched and 7,300,000 views. This story based on the popular book series by Aaron Blabey has also not captivated viewers. Currently, it has a score of 69% from the press and 64% from the rest of the subscribers.
Given what has been seen, Netflix’s numbers do not correspond to the negative comments it receives from the specialized media. However, they will be of little use if your audience only increases. Just as the saying goes, it goes in one ear and out the other.
