Windows 11 24H2: Will I be able to install this new version on my PC?

There’s not much time left to download the new version of Windows 11, the long-awaited 24H2. This will be one of the biggest updates seen since the launch of the operating system, full of changes, improvements, corrections, new features, and a lot of Artificial Intelligence. After almost two years working on it, and a long wait, Windows 11 24H2 is almost here. And next week, we will be able to download this new version. As long as, of course, our PC can handle it.

Microsoft has been heavily criticized since the launch of Windows 11 for the strict requirements it has imposed to be able to install its operating system. We recall that, in addition to increasing RAM usage, Microsoft has dropped support for a large number of relatively new Intel and AMD processors, and requires that the PC have a TPM 2.0 chip, with Secure Boot activated, in order to install this system.

Error installing Windows 11 - Minimum requirements

Any relatively new computer will run Windows 11 without any problems, and we can be guaranteed updates. But if the PC is already a few years old, even if it is more than capable of running the system without any problems in terms of power, we may encounter some impediment that prevents us from doing so.

Windows 11 24H2 Requirements

Broadly speaking, the requirements to install this new version of Windows 11 are going to be the same as those to install the base operating system. That is:

  • Modern 1GHz dual-core processor.
  • 4GB RAM. 8GB RAM for using Copilot AI and other features.
  • 64GB storage space, SSD recommended.
  • Motherboard with UEFI, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0.
  • DirectX 12 compatible graphics card.
  • Internet to complete the installation.

But, as we anticipated a few months ago, this new version of Windows is going to be much more strict when it comes to the CPU. Thus, Microsoft has confirmed that the system can only be installed, and will only work, if the CPU supports SSE4.2 or SSE4a instructions. Otherwise, we won’t even be able to start Windows.

CPU-Z POPCNT

This means that all users who have installed Windows 11 using cheats (for example, modifying system files to bypass the requirements) will not be able to update to this version, since their processors will most likely not support these instructions. These users will have no choice but to stay on Windows 11 23H2, which will continue to be supported until the end of 2025.

Release date

Although Microsoft has not yet officially announced the release date for the new version of Windows, the company made a mistake in a recent post in which it revealed the date on which this new version will reach all users. This date is, without going any further, next week, as an optional update, and October 7 as a mandatory update for all users.

As soon as it is available, we will be able to download and install the new version from Windows Update to update our system. In addition, Microsoft will also upload new ISOs so that we can install 24H2 from scratch on any PC.

Don’t miss the exhaustive list of new features in Windows 11 24H2 that we have published if you want to discover everything that Microsoft brings us in this update.
