Over the years, technology users are becoming more aware of the importance of their privacy. This is something that is especially evident in these times and with the constant use of the Internet. Hence the growing success of operating systems that help us in these tasks, as is the case with Linux Tails.

Once we know this, a growing number of users are looking for private and secure alternatives among the many Linux distributions available. For years now, this proposal that we told you about, Tails, has become one of the favorites for many of them.

We tell you all this because the open source operating system, focused on providing us with the best anonymity on the Internet, has just received an important update. This way we can download and install Tails 6.8, the most recent version of the system, on our computers and take advantage of all the new features included. It is precisely about all of them that we are going to talk to you below.

New features coming to Linux Tails 6.8

It is true that we cannot say that it is an update full of new functions, although it is still worth installing it as soon as possible. Likewise, its developers correct the most recent errors detected in previous versions of the operating system.

At this point it is initially worth noting that Tails 6.8 now includes a new method for file system repair. We can do all this by unlocking the persistent storage that the distro includes. Specifically, when this file system has errors, Tails now offers us the possibility to repair it by unlocking it from the software’s welcome screen.

Although not all file system errors can be safely recovered in this way, in most cases it will be extremely useful to users. And, on the other hand, it is worth noting that the developers of this distribution have updated the Tor browser to its most recent version, 13.5.6. Another improvement included is the arrival of a notification when a network interface is disabled because MAC address anonymity failed.

New version fixes and how to download

As we told you before, the Tails developers have also introduced a series of corrections to the most recent errors detected in previous versions. Now we tell you some of the most important ones that you should take into consideration.

  • Increased the maximum wait time to 8 minutes when unlocking persistent storage before returning an error here.
  • They hide the password displayed when unlocking persistent storage.
  • Tails now handles crashes better when sending error messages.
  • Fixed input fields when Tails is not connected to Tor.
  • Its developers fix the accessibility of input fields with the screen reader.

Once we know all this, we have the possibility of downloading the latest version of Tails 6.8 from its official website. Specifically, we can carry out the download process from this link. If we already have this operating system on the computer, under normal conditions it should update itself.

Update: Tails 6.8.1 available

Just a few hours after the launch of version 6.8 of this anonymous operating system, its developers have announced the arrival of a new emergency update: Tails 6.8.1.

This version only fixes one very serious bug: the zero-day vulnerability detected in Mozilla’s browser, Firefox. Thus, in the list of changes we can see that Tor Browser is updated to version 13.5.7, which corrects the MFSA 2024-51 bug, which is so dangerous that it can allow your computer to be hacked.

As always, you can update from the system itself, manually, or create a new boot drive with the new version.
