Lutris, the all-round video game program that allows Linux users to play PC video games from a large number of distributors, has recently been updated to version 0.5.18, with a large-caliber update that has introduced a juicy package of new features that will make life much easier for users of free operating systems.

This game center that we have already talked about before, specifically, about how to play Epic Games titles with it, thus consolidates itself as one of the best free tools that Ubuntu users and other Linux systems can use to play .

The program reduces the friction that exists between a large number of video games and Linux-based operating systems, because most games are produced with Windows and macOS in mind and, therefore, are not designed or optimized specifically for a distro. Linux.

Lutris is compatible with stores such as GOG, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect and Origin, integrates Wine and Proton and supports DXVK and Vulkan, among others. A whole set of software with which to emulate, when necessary, games originally released for Windows.

In the design section, Lutris adopts a dark theme by default, adds a new section to bring together all the games that the user has not yet classified, making them easy to find, and applies other adjustments that make its interface look more modern and clean. Players can now use labels in the search bar to differentiate, for example, between games installed or not or by the store they come from.

Major improvements

At the software level, it adds some features that reduce manual work for the user. For example, Lutris now automatically downloads the latest version of the GE-Proton build if we have Wine installed. Additionally, Lutris has updated its integrations with Flathub and Amazon to work with the new APIs, meaning these features are back up and running. In the case of Itch.io, there is a change where if you have a collection called “Lutris” on Itch.io, the platform will automatically load it.

Additionally, GOG and Itch.io sources can now offer installers for both Linux and Windows in a single game, providing greater flexibility for those using both systems. Platform support has also been expanded, adding support for the ‘foot’ terminal, Ayatana application flags, and DirectX 8 in DXVK v2.4. New options have also been included for the Ruffle runner, and download links for the Atari800 and MicroM8 runners have been updated.

Other parts of the update are aimed at improving problem resolution. Duckstation, a popular PlayStation 1 emulator, has also been added.

The complete list of improvements is available on the Lutris GitHub profile.

An improvement in the Linux video game section can positively contribute to the influx of users to Linux experienced in recent months continuing and accentuating, allowing free software to improve its market share on desktop PCs.
