Cheap refueling apps
Fuel prices are still high, even though you still have to travel for work. It is then worthwhile to use an iPhone app to see where cheap petrol or diesel can be found. The iPhone shows you the way to cheap fuel, so you know whether it makes sense to drive. There are also other ways to save, for example with special promotions or by rolling out more often. These are the best iPhone apps for cheap refueling.

We have a separate list of apps for electric charging your car.
#1 ANWB On the road
The ANWB Onderweg app offers much more than petrol costs. This gives you insight into parking spaces and costs, traffic jams, speed cameras and road works, among other things. For now we will focus on the options surrounding refueling. On the ‘Refuel & Charge’ tab you will find an overview of petrol stations and charging points for electric cars. You can switch off these charging points if you do not have an electric car.
If you are looking for a gas station, you will find an overview of the price per liter on the map. You choose whether you want to see the price of Euro 95 (E10), Euro 98, LPG or diesel. Colors indicate whether you are looking for a cheap deal. From the ANWB app you can immediately navigate to the cheapest gas station. The app shows you the current prices of nearby gas stations and does this quickly and clearly. It is a shame that you do not receive more information about facilities at the gas stations, such as car washes, free/paid toilets and restaurants. Sometimes you prefer to stop at a gas station where there is also a McDonald’s or Starbucks, so that you can immediately combine the useful with the pleasant.
ANWB Onderweg also has a CarPlay app, with which you can see the price at nearby gas stations on the map via your car screen. You can also see the prices of gas stations nearby, sorted by the lowest prices.
A bonus tip: ANWB shows the Dutch prices at petrol stations in the Netherlands as standard and if you log in with your ANWB account you will also see the current prices for foreign petrol stations. This is only available to ANWB members. On the website you will find a handy overview of general European petrol prices, so that you know whether it is best to refuel in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany or France on the way to your holiday address.
#2 DirectLease Fuel Service
The DirectLease Tankservice app can also be used if you are not a customer of this leasing company. On the map you can see in colors how expensive the petrol is: green is cheap, red is expensive. If you tap on a gas station, you will receive additional information such as: address, opening hours, unmanned, car wash, trailer rental and the like. You see how much you pay for petrol, diesel, LPG and other fuels. What is useful about this app is that it also works in Belgium. Another plus is that you can filter by brand, so if you like to refuel at Shell or Esso, you can indicate that. And it is also useful to know whether a gas station is near the highway, or whether you have to drive a long way into a built-up area. In our experience, the fuel prices at DirectLease are very current. Highly recommended to use in addition to the ANWB app.
#3 Tankey
Tankey lets you refuel cheaper by offering a discount on the price charged at the pump. To this end, Tankey works together with partners such as HEMA, MediaMarkt and T-Mobile. For example, if you are a customer at a certain store, you will receive a discount on the fuel price. However, it does not work at all gas stations, so you will have to search a bit more to claim your discount. The discount can be up to 20 cents per liter.
#4 1-2-3 Fuel
This originally German app compares gasoline prices in several countries: Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. That’s useful, because it also allows you to save money on holiday. And if you live near the German border, you can keep an eye on exactly when it is time to refuel. German gas stations are obliged to provide their current prices and in the app you can use a price graph to see how prices fluctuate during the day. Is the gas station busy? Then the price can simply go up. Make sure you see whether you still see the same price at the pump when you arrive at the gas station. Anyone who is smart can save a few cents per liter this way. You can navigate directly to the gas station from the app, save favorite stations and become a premium subscriber for some extra features. However, many features are free, such as separate lists for the cheapest, smartest and closest addresses. The smartest option is always a gas station with a low price that you don’t have to drive too far to get to.
#5 Refueling SME Fuel
This fuel app was created by MKB Brandstof, a company that supplies fuel cards to entrepreneurs. However, the fuel app can be used by everyone, even if you are not a customer. You can view a map or list of gas stations nearby. The biggest disadvantage is that the prices in this app are less often correct, compared to other apps. However, at certain gas stations you will not only see today’s prices, but also tomorrow’s. If you can wait a day to save extra money, it is worth it – if the price is right.
#6 Waze
If you don’t want to install additional apps, you can also take a look at Waze, that other navigation app from Google. If you tap the petrol icon in the search box, you will see a map and a list of nearby petrol stations including prices. You see the distance to the gas station and the colors indicate the price level (red is expensive, green is cheap). The prices are updated less often than those of specialized apps, but they do give an impression: expensive stations are also often on the expensive side at other times. Each prize indicates when the prize was last collected. As you drive to your destination, you can search and choose gas stations along the route based on price and the time it takes to drive. Waze contains ads, so the result at the top of the list may not be the best.
#7 Google Maps
You cannot see fuel prices in Google Maps in all countries, but you can do so in Belgium, Germany and several other countries. When searching for a petrol station you will see the current price per liter for E10 and if you open the detail page you will also see the prices of Super+ 98 and diesel. In addition, you often see a photo of the gas station, so you can more easily recognize your destination. Google Maps is a good alternative to the fuel website Carbu.com, a clumsy Belgian website that does show prices of other fuels such as heating oil.
#8 Petrollo
This friendly app was made by an older Dutch developer, who wants you to take your foot off the gas. So coast, instead of driving like crazy towards the traffic light and then braking sharply. With the app you can see whether you are rolling out properly and how much you are saving. You manually enter the average liter price and the app shows how much CO2 and how much money you have saved. Free! You can read more about it in this article from Het Parool.
#9 Pace Drive
Since iOS 16, it has been possible for apps to pay for your refueling directly via CarPlay. There is currently one app that supports this in the Netherlands and Europe and that is the PACE Drive app. The app works with the Connected Fueling platform. This is an originally German platform that petrol stations can join. Connected petrol stations offer the option to start refueling directly via an app. The PACE Drive app offers options and also has an extensive CarPlay app. In the Netherlands, dozens of gas stations from Argos, Shell, Tamoil and Esso, among others, work together with the app. At some locations you can also see what the liter price is.
With the CarPlay app you not only see the gas stations in your area (both with and without Connected Fueling), but you can also pay for your fuel. In the list of gas stations, tap the one closest to you and then you can navigate to it (using Apple Maps or Google Maps) or start filling up if you’re already at the gas station. You can read more information in our article about refueling with CarPlay.
Gasoline brand apps
- Tamoil (Free, iPhone, iOS 10.0+) – With the Tamoil app you can save for an extra discount at the pump. You get a 5 cent discount per liter for the first two refills, followed by 1 cent. And after refueling 350 liters you will receive another 5 cent discount. You can quickly find the nearest gas station; this is about 200. In addition, Tamoil compensates the CO2 emissions for the fuel you have filled up.
- Tango (Free, iPhone, iOS 11.0+) – Find the nearest Tango gas station and save Tango Credit for a discount on your fuel fill. You can pay via the app with direct debit or the Q8 Liberty Card, without having to take out your bank card. You can even park with the Tango app with low transaction costs.
- Shell – simple refueling & saving (Free, iPhone, iOS 13.0+) – Refueling and saving with the Shell app. Enter your pump number, check and confirm your transaction (Apple Pay, PayPal or credit card), refuel and continue! In the app you can also view a digital receipt for every payment made with SmartPay.
- BPme: pay, refuel, drive (Free, iPhone, iOS 14.0+) – Pay at participating BP gas stations in the Netherlands with iDEAL, MasterCard, Visa, American Express and the BP Fuel Card. You can also find a gas station and view your FreeBees balance.
- Services – TotalEnergies (Free, iPhone, iOS 14.7+) – Total also has an app. Register your TotalEnergies Club card and access all services, find the nearest gas station with certain services and rate the station.
Measuring fuel consumption
If you want more insight into your fuel consumption, you can also record this with apps. Examples are:
- Fuelio – gas log, MPG (Free, iPhone, iOS 12.0+) – An app from Sygic that records your trips, gas mileage and more. Provides detailed stats. You enter the refills yourself, including the liter price, and record the car journeys you have made. The app calculates the fare and the average consumption of the car. You can also keep track of when you last refueled. You export the data to the computer for declaration or further analysis.
- Road Trip MPG (€7.99, iPhone, iOS 15.0+) – An English-language app gives you a comprehensive overview of the costs per kilometer. The app is completely focused on fuel costs: you enter the liter price and the number of liters each time you fill up and register which journeys you have made. You can then view the costs per month, week or day. The app costs money, but you will earn it back (if all goes well).
- Fuel Tracker Gas & Mileage Log (Free, iPhone+ IAPiOS 15.0+) – Another app to calculate your fuel costs, with graphs.
- EasyRit (Free, iPhone/iPad, iOS 11.0+) – This app for trip registration is also useful for additions, declarations and the like.
