If you want to travel corona-proof, the car is an ideal means of transport. You sit together with your own housemates and drive throughout the Netherlands, where you only have to get out to refuel. There are plenty of apps that make driving a lot easier and more fun and we’ve listed them here for you.

With the iPhone in the car you can do more than just navigate. You will find all kinds of useful apps in the App Store. Whether you need a new car, are looking for technical information, want to stay informed of the latest traffic reports or want to keep track of your kilometers driven, there is always a suitable app. With the suggestions below you always have all the information at hand.

#1 Apps for electric driving

If you have an electric car, you naturally want to know where the charging stations are and which chargers you can go to. Fortunately, we have a separate list of apps for electric drivers. In fact, we even have two! There are also CarPlay apps for electric cars!

#2 Buying and selling a car

Before you can go on the road with the car, you will first have to buy one. You can go to the well-known addresses for this: Marktplaats, of course, but also some specialized sites and apps:

  • Marktplaats – buy and sell (Free, iPhone/iPad, iOS 15.0+) – You can search the Marktplaats app for a specific car make or see what’s for sale in your area.

  • Gas Pedal.nl: car comparison tool (Free, iPhone/iPad, iOS 12.0+) – Search multiple car sites at the same time.

  • AutoScout24: buy a car (Free, iPhone/iPad + IAPiOS 14.0+) – An originally German car site that is active throughout Europe.

  • AutoTrader: Used Cars (Free, iPhone/iPad, iOS 14.0+) – Once owned by publisher Sanoma, but now also under AutoScout24.

#3 Get car information

If you have your eye on a beautiful occasion, you want to know all the details. You can do this with the RDW Vehicle app, which also offers information about motorcycles, mopeds, caravans and trailers. You can request the data for free of all vehicles with registration in the Netherlands via this app. They come directly and in real time from the RDW vehicle registration register. You can request vehicle data such as fuel consumption, power, economy label, weight, information about the odometer reading, possibly ‘stolen status’ and information about recalls. Furthermore, you can check how long a vehicle has been registered to the current owner and how many owners there have been.

There are also external providers of such apps, for example Finnik iKenteken. With this you will receive extensive information about all Dutch cars. You enter a registration number and receive all the information for free, such as MOT expiry date, new price and the number of owners. You can also check the counter reading. The information comes from sources such as RDW, Autotelex, Autotrust and Autozine. If you create a profile, the app can also remind you of the APK inspection. With the Premium License Plate Check you get even more information for a few euros.

#4 See what a fine costs

What are the fines for driving too fast, sticking to the bumper or crossing an expulsion zone? You can find it with this free app, which unfortunately has not yet been updated for 2021. So you see the fines for 2020, but they are generally a good indicator for later years. It is hoped that the developer will continue to maintain this app. Received a fine? Add it to your list and have all your fines added up automatically.

#6 Listening to the radio in the car

The car is the ideal place to listen to the radio. While a DJ talks the songs together, you arrive at your destination unnoticed. There are several apps for iPhone that allow you to listen to radio. You then stream the music to your (Bluetooth) car radio or connect it with a cable. If you have CarPlay, there are even apps made especially for it!

#7 Navigating and speed cameras

Ultimately, of course, you also want to arrive at your destination and preferably without fines. You can use all kinds of navigation apps for the iPhone for this. Many navigation apps now also work in CarPlay. And to avoid fines you can install a special speed camera app, but we increasingly see that both functions have been merged. For example, Apple Maps has also received speed cameras and you can now also navigate with Flitsmeister.

#8 Refuel and park on the go

You cannot drive through in one piece, usually you will want to refuel on the way, get a sandwich and make a sanitary stop. Sometimes you also have to pay for parking. The ANWB Road app offers all that information for a trip within the Netherlands. You will see recent traffic information, parking rates (including garages and opening hours), nearest gas stations with real-time petrol prices and much more. #9 Bad luck on the road: these apps help

If you break down on the road, there are apps such as ANWB Wegenwacht with which you can call for help. In the list below you will not only find emergency services that can tow your car, but also apps to, for example, resuscitate or consult a doctor.

#10 Knowing when to leave

It’s not all doom and gloom along the way. If you leave on time, you can drive to your destination relaxed and you will not have to deal with traffic jams and roadworks. The TimesUpp app can tell you what time you have to leave. This is a traffic assistant that sends you a notification when it’s time to leave. Is it suddenly busy on your current route? Then you can immediately choose an alternative route from the app. Do you prefer to travel by public transport? No problem. That is also possible.

Register kilometers
