It’s time! Everything indicates that we are ready to start enjoying the Digi television service in Spain. We discussed it weeks ago regarding its release in Portugal and now we can prepare, because it seems that the launch in our country is imminent.
We knew that the arrival of Digi TV in Spain was a matter of time. It had been discussed months ago and, seeing that the service was already being tested in Portugal, everything indicated that we would also soon enjoy it in our country. Just a few days ago we were talking about how we expected its launch to take place soon and, from what we have learned, the release could be imminent. And when we say imminent we mean in a few days, although it cannot be considered closed yet.
We have contacted Digi to corroborate the information that comes from Portugal, and which we talk about below, and they have responded to us that, in fact, they are working on the TV project. They also remind us that, although they cannot give a specific date, their own CEO already said a few months ago that “it will be a reality very soon.” Therefore, one should not be surprised if Digi TV is announced for Spain at any time.
First confirmation
Although the exact launch date has not been announced in our country, in the presentation that was held in Portugal to give rise to the start of the service, our market has had a small space. Digi has shown a series of data about its main markets and, of course, Spain has been included among them. As you can see in the photo, the services that are available in our country are indicated. They talk about their different services and, if we continue looking at the list, we also notice that “CATV in the launch phase” is indicated. And that, without a doubt, is excellent news for Digi customers.
The launch phase is just what those who wanted Digi to dive into providing a television service were hoping for. It means that we are very close to leaving the service, something somewhat understandable if we take into account that it has already gone through a long testing period in Portugal.
Regarding the television service, at least taking as reference the data that has been provided at this event for Portugal, it is worth knowing that Digi will have decoders both with Android and without Android. Likewise, they mention that they are still finalizing negotiations for the presence of sports channels in the service and that the availability of the apps will be immediate on both iOS and Android. Previously we talked about the channels that Digi TV would have in Portugal, but for now we will have to wait to find out under what proposal it will be launched in our country. It is to be imagined that they will share the same philosophy and that, in one way or another, Digi will also make the effort to have sports as they have mentioned.
Spain is a main market
Reviewing the rest of Digi’s presentation we have before us other important data that is worth highlighting. For example, Digi indicates that its two main markets are Romania and Spain and that, as of September 2024, they already have more than 22 million homes covered with their Digi fiber service. The operator is interested in continuing to strengthen its leadership in these two markets while, in parallel, it continues to expand in Portugal and Belgium.
If we talk about data in Spain, Digi highlights its value as the country’s fourth operator in the mobile network with 9.1% of the market share, as well as 9% of the share in the fiber sector. They also place special emphasis on the fact that they have not had price increases since 2008 and that, therefore, they offer a very competitive proposal that is making more and more progress. Along with other data, such as remembering that they have been leaders in portability since 2022, what is revealed is that 11 million Spanish homes already enjoy 1 Gbps FTTH fiber and a 10 Gbps network.
