iOS 18 is now available worldwide, after its presentation at the last WWDC 2024, on September 16, Apple’s new operating system was launched. In this article, I’m going to tell you all the new features it brings from the point of view of the HomeKit application. Stay here to learn what the reality of your smart home can be like from today, thanks to iOS 18.
The truth is that not many updates to Apple Home or Homekit have been announced so far, and we’ve had to make do with little more than rumors. But with iOS18 now out, we’re now ready to tell you all about the new features of HomeKit with this new version of Apple’s operating system. Find out what changes are coming with this new version and how you can make the most of them.
New compatible devices
Until now, Apple didn’t have a specific category for these devices, even though there were already models compatible with other assistants such as Alexa or Google Home. With this update, you’ll not only be able to control the robot vacuum cleaner, but you’ll also have the option to manage functions such as suction power, cleaning mode, and battery, all from the Home app. This means that if you already have a robot vacuum cleaner, it will most likely soon be compatible with HomeKit, provided the manufacturer releases an update for it. And if you don’t have one, now is the best time to consider one that is compatible, as you’ll be able to fully integrate it into your Apple ecosystem.
We must remember that home automation with Apple Homekit is completely local, we do not depend on the cloud, so we do not even need to have an Internet connection to be able to operate the device in question.
Digital keys and guest access control
Another interesting new feature that iOS 18 brings us is the new options to manage access to your home. Now, from the Home app, you can create digital keys so that guests can access your home, either to open the garage door or deactivate the alarm, all in a controlled manner.
Of course, to be able to use this feature you will need a HomePod or Apple TV at home, and a lock compatible with Matter, the standard that Apple is adopting to improve the compatibility of its devices with other smart systems. It is perfect for those who rent their home on platforms such as Airbnb or for families with children who need temporary access.
Customizing the Control Center
This is something that many users have been asking for. Now, you can decide which devices you want to have at hand in your iPhone’s control panel. This allows you, for example, to quickly access the smart door lock, the lights in the living room or the thermostat without having to enter the Home app.
This new feature not only saves you time, but makes smart home management much more fluid and convenient. If you are one of those who use HomeKit to control multiple devices at home, this customization is a must-have tool.
Adaptive lighting for smart bulbs
Apple continues to strive to improve the smart lighting experience, and in iOS 18 it has introduced support for adaptive lighting. Now, if you have compatible bulbs, such as those from Nanoleaf, you can set the color temperature to change automatically throughout the day. This not only improves visibility, but also reduces eye strain.
These types of automatic changes are perfect if you spend a lot of time at home or if you work from home, as they help you create a better environment without having to manually adjust the light every few hours.
With iOS 18, Apple continues to improve the HomeKit ecosystem, making it more useful and versatile for those who already have a smart home.
