A new year begins and, as is usual every January, it’s time to see what increases in price. Although it is impossible to know how the cost of energy will progress this year, since it depends on many variables, we do know with certainty that, for now, VAT goes from 5 to 10%. In addition, the Special Electricity Tax, which was at 0.5%, rises to 2.5%. All this will mean that, on paper, the electricity bill you pay will increase. We are going to give you some tips so that it does not affect you.

The goal is for you to continue paying the same or, in the best case, less. You will see that, just by making some adjustments, you can maintain what you pay for electricity and that these tax increases will not make your bill more expensive. In addition, January, February and March tend to be months of high consumption, due to low temperatures.

Pay less for electricity

There are many types of rates that you can contract and one of the main differences is whether or not it has time discrimination. However, whichever one you have contracted, you can always take into account these tips that we are going to give you to try to save money and not be affected by the increase in taxes.

Check the contracted power

You can counteract that increase in VAT and IEE that we have mentioned, by reviewing the power you have contracted. The higher the power, the more you will pay each month. In many cases, you don’t need to have as much hired and you could be saving money. For example, perhaps your peak consumption is 4.5 kWh and you have contracted for 5.75 kWh.

Keep in mind that there is always a margin before your power goes out. That is, if you have contracted a power of 4.5 kWh, for example, and you go to 4.75, you will have a few minutes of margin. You may occasionally turn on something like the microwave and have it run for a few minutes. Therefore, analyze carefully how much you have contracted and whether you really need that much or not.

Is time discrimination convenient for you?

This point is also important. It will depend a lot on each case, so you should analyze whether or not it is convenient for you to have time discrimination in your electricity rate. This means that you will pay based on the hourly price. There are rates that allow you to pay less at night and on weekends, while the rest of the time it is more expensive.

For example, it may be interesting for a person who works outside and is away from home practically all day and a large part of their consumption is concentrated at night and on weekends. In that case, it is interesting to contract a rate with time discrimination.

Time discrimination in the electricity bill

Control the most consumed devices

It is important that you carefully control those devices that consume the most. For example, we can name some such as the dishwasher, the washing machine, the oven… If you make these appliances consume less, you can save a lot on your electricity bill and thus counteract these tax or price increases.

What can you do? A good idea is to use Eco mode whenever possible. Also take advantage of the residual heat of the oven, keep the appliances clean and in good condition or use alternatives when you can, such as using the microwave instead of the oven.

Adjust the temperature well

In addition, maintaining a good temperature at home can help save electricity. Adjust the thermostat well, as a key point, but it is also advisable to improve thermal insulation or ventilate the house at the correct time and thus avoid a temperature contrast that causes an increase in consumption.

Precisely, the devices that are used to heat or cool the house are some of the ones that use the most energy. We can name the heating, a stove, a brazier, the air conditioning… Therefore, controlling the temperature will be helpful.

In short, you can take into account these tips that we have given to save on your electricity bill this year. Even if some taxes rise that make the price of energy more expensive, you can always counteract it with good practices and some adjustments you make.
