Coffee has become a great ally for health, although it is often discouraged because it can speed up the heart rate. A group of researchers from the American College of Cardiology now indicate that this drink is not related to new heart diseases, but could even have a protective role for this organ.
Affirming research was presented at the 71st Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology after analyzing data on coffee consumption in 382,535 people with an average age of 57 and no history of heart disease over a 10-year period and put it in relation to cases of arrhythmias, cardiovascular diseases, heart failure, stroke or death from these causes.
The results showed that drinking two to three cups of coffee each day was linked to a 10% to 15% reduction in the risk of developing heart failure, coronary heart disease, heart rhythm problems, or dying from any reason. In addition, people who drank a cup of coffee a day were found to have the lowest rates of stroke or heart-related death.
Coffee is safe for people with cardiovascular diseases
On the other hand, they did a second study in which 34,279 people who had some type of cardiovascular problem were examined, to see the effects that coffee consumption had on them. The findings indicated that there was no association between coffee and more heart rhythm problems, including atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
In addition, of the 24,111 participants who had arrhythmias at the start of the study, those who drank coffee reduced their risk of death and those with atrial fibrillation who drank a cup of this drink a day had a 20% lower chance of dying compared to those with atrial fibrillation. those who did not have this consumption habit.
“Regular coffee consumption is safe and could be part of a healthy diet for people with heart disease”
“Doctors are generally apprehensive about people with known cardiovascular disease or arrhythmias continuing to drink coffee, so they often err on the side of caution and advise them to stop drinking it for fear it might trigger heart rhythms. dangerous. But our study shows that regular coffee consumption is safe and could be part of a healthy diet for people with heart disease”, explained Peter M. Kistler, lead author of the research.
This association, as explained in the study, could be due to the fact that coffee, in addition to caffeine, has more than 100 biologically active compounds, which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, boost metabolism, improve sensitivity to insulin, block receptors involved in abnormal heart rhythms and inhibit the absorption of fat in the intestine.
Finally, they did a third study in which they analyzed the effects of coffee according to the type, whether it was instant or ground, with or without caffeine. However, they came to the same conclusion: Drinking two or three cups of coffee a day lowered the risk of arrhythmias, stroke, blockages in the arteries of the heart, or heart failure, regardless of whether the coffee was instant or ground.
In addition, lower death rates were found for all types of cafes. In the case of decaf, it was observed that it did not have beneficial effects against incident arrhythmia, but it reduced cardiovascular diseases, with the exception of heart failure. Therefore, Kistler believes that caffeinated coffee would be the best option to obtain all the benefits of this drink.
