How to factory reset Chromecast

Most Chromecast devices work flawlessly. It is very rare that it presents faults, although it can happen. Luckily all the problems that occur in Chromecast can be easily solved by resetting the device to its factory state or updating the software.

Although this is not the only reason why a Chromecast device is factory reset. Sometimes we sell the device and want to deliver it to its next owner almost like new. In any case, restarting it is a very simple procedure, which should not imply a major problem.

How to reset Chromecast to its factory state?

The possibilities you have to reset your Chromecast will depend on the generation of your device. There are currently three known ways to restore it. Here we will show you the three alternatives so that you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

Reset Chromecast from Google Home – Option 1

  • First make sure that your mobile device is connected to the same WiFi network where the Chromecast is connected to the TV.
  • On the mobile device you must have previously installed the Google Home application. Download it from the stores of your device, be it Android or iOS.
  • Open the app and select the Account tab at the top right of the shortcuts.
  • Select the Local Devices option.
  • Then choose the Chromecast and then select the Settings button which is a gear-shaped icon.
  • Finally, select the Factory Reset option.
  • The Chromecast will start the reset process. The device will reboot several times, but once it’s done you’ll be able to set up the device again.

Reset Chromecast from PC – Option 2

  • The Chromecast must be connected to the TV and to the same network where the PC is connected.
  • Open the Chrome browser app on PC.
  • Look for the Chromecast app in the Chrome browser in the toolbar located at the top right.
  • Click on the application icon and select the Chromecast you want to factory reset, in case you have several.
  • Click the settings or options button (depending on the version you have installed).
  • In the available options, search for and select the option Restore factory settings.
  • Confirm the action by selecting the Reset option.
  • The Chromecast starts the reset process and will take a few minutes to be ready to set up again.

Reset Chromecast from device – Option 2

No matter what your Chromecast device is, whether it’s first or second generation, it sure has a home button. The only element that varies is the physical location of the button. Resetting the data of a Chromecast from the button is the easiest way to carry out this procedure.

  • Turn on the device with the power button. You can verify that the Chromecast is on because the LED indicator remains solid.

  • Press the same power button, but this time hold it down for at least 25 seconds or until the LED indicator starts flashing and changes color.
  • Now start the factory reset sequence of the Chromecast so you can set it up again.

Set up Chromecast again

The Chromecast is like the first time and it is necessary to configure it again.

  • Connect the Chromecast to the TV and turn it on.

  • Install the Google Home app on your mobile device.
  • Make sure you’re connected to the Wi-Fi network with the name of the Chromecast. This connection has no internet connection and is only used for the setup process.
  • Sign in to the Google Home app and select the Google account you want to use in the app.
  • On the TV screen a code on the screen, you must confirm that it is the same code.
  • Select a room or create a new one.

  • Sign in from the Chromecast to your home Wi-Fi network.
  • Check that everything is installed correctly and now disconnect your mobile from the network and connect it again to the Wi-FI network.
  • Now the Chromecast is configured and ready to use.
